Sojourner
But if the bed is blessed, then you can't really get rid of it to get a new one, right? I mean, you could bury it, I guess. Imagine this scenario: Elderly couple is out in the backyard digging a very large hole... Neighbor: Hey, whacha doin'? You planning to bury someone? hehe... Husband: No. We're just planning to properly dispose of our blessed marital bed. Neighbor: What the-- ? Wife: Yes. You see, when we were married, we had our marriage bed blessed. We needed to get a new mattress (Sean's back is getting bad, you know) and the proper way to dispose of such objects is to burn them or bury them. And well, the fire regulations in this city won't allow for such a large fire... Husband: Yeah. Hey, would you mind giving me a hand carrying "Old Faithful" out here to the backyard? Neighbor: <walks away> Crazy Catholics...
You are hilarious, simply hilarious. :
Theoketos
Two of best friends were betrothed by an Abbot. My beloved and I were alomost, except we ran out of time, so we got married instead. At Benedictine College, this is a very popular thing to do.

avemaria40
I'm actually thinking that after I complete my research I will write a booklet about betrothal to distribute on campus. I've been thinking of so many reasons why it is a the best thing for Catholic couples to do (when their relationship matures to that level of course).. *sigh* And I might just slip in the blessing of the marriage bed thing too.
If u write such a booklet, can u plz put it on phatmass? that's exactly what i want if/when i do get engaged

Aloysius
Without a doubt. Phew, that was easy. To be double sure just make sure that you have your betrothal banquet on family property or something where you can righfully drink.
not in the commune of pennsylvania did I say commune? I meant commonwealth I got so mad when this cop was explaining this to us in school... I was like "so even parents can't let their kids drink" and he said yep... so I looked it up and he's right. beaver dam pennsylvania anyway, I was just speaking with my fiance about this, I really think we will end up doing it. I'll invite some of y'all if you promise to bring monetary gifts :
Laudate_Dominum
Here is a snippet from the email response I received from the USCCB Secretariat for Doctrine and Pastoral Practices:
Your inquiry regarding a Catholic ceremony for betrothal (or solemn engagement) has been forwarded to me for a response. I am able to confirm that your research has led you in all of the right directions, including the most recent complementary norm from the USCCB implementing c. 1062! This remains the current norm for the Latin Church in the United States
My more particular questions were not answered, but I have a canon lawyer buddy who is researching it for me because I managed to get him sufficiently interested in the matter. I want to have all the details flushed out before I write my booklet. And my Bishop happens to be on the council for marriage and family so I'm hoping to possibly get feedback from him when I have a solid draft put together. Who knows, maybe even an endorsement so people know its legit.

Colleen
I think this is a very cool idea. It would make an engagement even more special. I might like to do it (if I get engaged).
