Society Will Get Worse Before Better....

Something to consider in regards to children (including young teens) and the internet...

Look at how bad society has become from children being babysat by television.

Now, think of how bad it will get with the children being babysat by the internet.

Parents need to take responsibility in the home and spend time raising their kids, not giving them a tool that they are not ready to use so that the parents get the children out of their hair.

Just a thought... I'm sure it's preaching to the choir here, maybe you know a parent that gives a child online access unsupervised, and you can help by bringing this topic up. Maybe take the angle that society has been going downhill so fast because of all the children being babysat by the TV, imagine what the internet will do to society.

Porn is easily viewed by anyone... it's everywhere. Not just normal porn, but serious disordered porn... just look at the spam you get in your inbox, beastiality is the up and coming oddity that is becoming a porn mainstream. Pagan Rome, Sodom and Gehmora had nothing compared to what the world has now. Thank God there are some holy ones or we would all be doomed.

Ah, but the internet is different in that a person can choose to visit sites such as phatmass, newadvent, the vatican, etc. With TV, one is limited to the choices. I see the internet as the great equalizer--giving fair voice to every viewpoint.

Mary's Knight, La

I sorta agree with dUST but internet access should still be monitored by parents and netnanny, et. al.

just like parents shouldn't give their kids carte blanche tv access there's much good stuff or not so bad stuff on both tv and the internet but there's also a lot of really horrible stuff.

Society can get better but only if people stand up for traditional values and make it better. People can put TV shows and even stations off the air but only if they do something about it. at the very least don't watch those shows or stations better yet right to the people in charge demanding that they offer better programming

This is kind of interesting because in a way it fulfills the prophecy of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and I also believe St. Theresa of Avila had a similar prophecy, that there would be "black boxes in every home that seperated many from God in the future." Do we know if this fulfills their prophecies for sure no, but almost every tv I have seen is black or grey in color, and we all know they can seperate people from God....

Very interesting don't you think?????

I think though in my own opinion tv is worst, because more people own them and it is easier for a child to see inappropriate programming on a tv then the internet. However, I think with teenagers and college students the internet is worst, because many of them have found loop holes into the porn sites and other inappropriate sites. :(:(:( :(

The majority of preteens, and young teens going through puberty should not be allowed total freedom to rome on the internet where they wish. Their choices will be clouded by hormones.

Those preteens and young teens that come to sites like this one are the exception to the rule. Far to many parents use the internet to babysit just as they did with the TV. That was my point with this topic.

M.Sigga,

good point

Seminarian,

Very interesting.

I can only partially agree with you, dUSt.

When we start getting pop-up ads with guys in Roman Collars promoting celebacy, prayer, contemplative-looking nuns and holy images along the sides of our email accounts (instead of partially nude close-ups offering bigger or smaller body parts...and potential e-dates! ugh!) And I am not talking about spam, I'm talking the ads around the border of the site. Ya can't even delete that.

But yes, at least we can choose the sites we visit. That's a plus.
