Fasting Before Communion

I know you're supposed to fast an hour before recieving communion-- but does that start an hour before Mass starts, or an hour before communion is actually distributed?

I usually don't split hairs like this, but I overslept this morning and didn't get breakfast until a half hour before Mass. But, when I glanced at my watch before communion, it had been more than an hour since I had eaten. (Thanks to a triple baptism.. lol!)

Is it a mortal sin to break the fast?

Mary's Knight, La

from what I understand it's supposed to be an hr before communion but I usually try for an hr before Mass. I don't think it's a mortal sin if you didnt' look at the clock before starting to eat due to forgetfulness but if it bothers you bring it to confession anyways

The fast is supposed to be an hour before receiving Communion regardless of when Mass starts. To intentionally break the fast and receive Holy Communion would be a mortal sin.

Where does it say this? I've also been told and a multitude of different so-called rules and it would be neat to know the truth!

I've read it in the Q & A section of EWTN many times.

I go with the old fashioned nothing by mouth after midnight on Sat night. It really sets my mind even on Sat towards thinking of the Eucharist. I eat immediately after church.

peace...

In answer to your question the revelant canon is Can.919 #1

Whoever is to receive the blessed Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before holy communion from all food and drink, with the sole exception of water and medicine

I am afraid it is one of the most ignored things especially when it is not taught to children or mentioned in church bulletins. I put it in our bulletin at least every three months as well as insisting the catechists teach the fast to their students for first holy communion.
