Extraordinary ministers openning the tabernacle

The reason our parish has been doing it recently, is because our priest has a hard time going up and down steps (the sanctuary is elevated). So he's given permission for EM's to go to the tabernacle for him. Our two previous priests did it themselves.

like I said, there's a cunundrum, because it is also wrong for the priest to leave the Eucharist on the altar and go over to that side chapel to get it. he's not supposed to leave the Eucharist after he's consecrated it.

and he's not supposed to have the pre-consecrated hosts out until after the consecration. and he's not supposed to have the extraordinary (illicitly ordinarily used) ministers of holy communion get it out of the tabernacle.

Erm, I know this isn't practical, but is there a problem w/ 2 tabernacles? One in the side chapel and one on the altar?

contrary to canon law 938
Can. 938 ß1 The blessed Eucharist is to be reserved habitually in only one tabernacle of a church or oratory.

ß2 The tabernacle in which the blessed Eucharist is reserved should be sited in a distinguished place in the church or oratory, a place which is conspicuous, suitably adorned and conducive to prayer.

ß3 The tabernacle in which the blessed Eucharist is habitually reserved is to be immovable, made of solid and non‚transparent material, and so locked as to give the greatest security against any danger of profanation.

ß4 For a grave reason, especially at night, it is permitted to reserve the blessed Eucharist in some other safer place, provided it is fitting.

ß5 The person in charge of a church or oratory is to see to it that the key of the tabernacle in which the blessed Eucharist is reserved, is in maximum safe keeping.

actually, the tabernacle is supposed to be in the sanctuary.

it's permissible to have it in a chapel though.

AND

laws also state that if the high altars werent smashed and gone, that's where the tabernacle was supposed to remain.

I have seen EMs (or others) accessing the tabernacle so frequently for so many years it never occured to me that it could possibly be wrong! >:(

I believe Cmom is right - it can be done with permission from the priest....and the reason Aloysius gives makes sense....

Does the priest usually return any unused hosts to the tabernacle?

No, he gives the cup (I smell of elderberries, can't type it) filled with the hosts to an EM to put in the tabernacle.
