i personally concentrate more most of the time when there is music. i really focus. its just one of those weird things where i become so intranced in the music and how its bringing my thoughts to Christ that i dont really notice anything else around me (sometimes that includes when prayer is over and its time to stand). i really really really like adoramus te domine during communion. really.

really.

I like singing a Eucharist - centered song during the distribution of Communion, then having a period of silence after everyone has recieved - that way the people last in line don't get their meditation time cut short, and everyone gets to sing the song.

either soloist or choir -- slow and steady allowing for meditation -- better yet, gregorian chant/polyphony are appropriate...

I like quiet Gregorian chant, no music, or Latin polyphony (unless it's incredibly good English, like this one song my choir sings). Most of the time I find louder music or anything in English a distraction. Sometimes that's good because the music itself is a prayer. Othertimes the English is not a prayer, which is sad (this is mostly the case), and then I find it really difficult to concentrate.

Today for Holy Communion my choir (actually a soloist) sang all six verses of the Tantum Ergo (different name, but you know the song I believe). Perfect because it is quiet and reverant, yet at the same time expresses what we're doing. If I want to sing, I'm singing along with what I'm doing. If I don't, I can remember where I am. And if I'm really weird, I can completely tune it out.

I think that the Recessional should be the one song is most uplifting, though this depends on the day. I don't think Lent particularly should be all that "joyful," it's just out of place.

Now many people think I'm old or outdated, but I do believe that they need to try a first Friday Mass at Cistercian in Dallas. :)

Our choir always sings sonething appropriate to the theme of the Mass , and then the organist plays softly while we meditate.

I would say no music because at my parish, it's usually some kind of annoying, sappy song or else "Table of Plenty." I'm fine with just an organist, but Table of Plenty with drums, egg shakers and guitars doesn't help me prepare to receive Our Lord in the Eucharist!

:hehe:

COME TO THE FEAST OF HEAVEN AND EARTH
COME TO THE TABLE OF PLEEEENTY
GOD WILL PROVIDE FOR ALL THAT WE NEED
HERE AT THE TABLE OF PLENTY

:hehe:

Sorry, couldn't resist. :D:

I prefer something a bit quieter during communion but I don't mind the fast songs either, however I have a pet peeve. I HATE it when choirs take a song and play it slowly when it's supposed to be a fast song. Drives me to distraction! :madrant: When this happens you can usually see my hand start motioning for a speed-up, even when I'm no where near the choir (Come one, come on! Let's go geez.)
