Whatever happened to spankings, taking things away, locking the door, etc.? We used to take stuffed animals away, toys, pillows, blankets... My daughter once ended up exhausted sleeping on the floor. We didn't have bed problems for a month. It's tough to be a parent, but we volunteered for the job. I remembered once, when she was about 7, she wouldn't stay in her bed so we made her get up and sit in the bathroom with all the lights on and the fan on for an hour. She learned it's boring to stay up.

My parents sometimes locked my door when I couldn't sleep and it would scare me to death.

I don't think I could ever do that.

Read them the telephone book if you have one, run the sweeper or an air conditioner or something else that makes white noise.
Or lock the door, put your arms firmly around them and go to sleep.
We had a family bed so it was really never an issue for us.

That sounds right...

I've heard that the worst thing you can do is allow your child to sleep with you...they'll never want to sleep alone...

It's not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes, climbing into bed with mom and dad can be comforting when they're sick or have had a nightmare.

Nope.

And what is so great about sleeping alone...

When you have a family bed, they fall asleep quickly, but you have the rest of the house to yourself, then you can come back to bed later. :D:

We have sort of a pseudo-family bed. Our children start out in their own beds (usually-- sometimes they fall asleep in ours). They can come in to our bed if they should wake up in the night. Usually, they don't. We have noticed that as they get older they don't come in as often. Ie, they learn to "sleep alone.' (as if that's an important life skill)...
