Ellenita
Ok I hate to sound stupid...but I'm not down with lots of Catholic terms and whatnot yet... Soo.... EM? Huh? This whole thread was over my head but I wanna understand what's going on. Please?
EMs are Extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist - the term is often incorrectly said as Eucharistic ministers. They are extraordinary ministers who are called on to assist when there are insufficient clerical ministers available. Extraordinary ministers should have received extensive training before they are able to carry out this service, have to be commissioned by the bishop and only allowed (in the UK anyway!) to assist in their own parish. I might add that not all EMs approach their service in the manner in which this thread suggests!

homeschoolmom
I won't go into detail about the mass I witnessed at the county fair last weekend. Let's just say it was lax... and really only about half a mass...
Theoketos
OK That is it. I am going on a Crusade against Eucharistic Ministers. No Really. I am not going shut up about this until I get fired or change happens. P.S. I work for a parish. P.P.S I have had it past my ears with liturgical abuse. Theoketos
I really think that maybe we need to start our own group dedicated to a renewal of the lay vocation to be the light to the world and the priestly vocation to serving the alter... Ellenita
That is it. I am going on a Crusade against Eucharistic Ministers.
First start a crusade about using the correct term! EM = Extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, NOT Eucharistic minister.....
Carnanc
this should not happen. Though, if its like my parish, all the EM's are scheduled to a specific day with an assigned position to stand at in the Church. When one is assigned weekly to be an EM, maybe they felt they were just doing their job, and maybe they believed they were helping the Bishop in this way. I think the solution here is to educate those involved. It probably is that the reason they are EM's is because they have a great respect for the Eucharist, but simply don''t understand the role of an EM. franciscanheart
I am an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and I know that a lot of people have a problem with that however we can do good and we can (and do) have a proper place. When we are respectful and we do not abuse the privilege (and neither does the priest) then we can be good and are actually quite helpful. Let's not bash all EMs. Some parishes use more than are necessary and we all have our own opinions about who should be able to and who should not. Let's recognize the abuse and put an end to it, not hate the EMs.
Except it's much more than 'communion'....thinking of our protestant days....! It's Extraordinary as Ordinary ministers of the Eucharist are men who have been ordained. I love the logic of our church!
