Brother Adam
So I'm wondering, what group traditionally is called to protect the Eucharist? Isn't it the Knights of Columbus? We were at mass back home in GR today and it was the Bishop of Pakistan presiding. After the consencration 6 extraordinary ministers came up (only 4 came up at first) but two other people HAD to have their positions because they felt they had a right to be an extraordinary minister. This confused the Bishop because with so few people he intended to be the only person to distribute the body of our Lord. The extraordinary ministers had the absolute arrogance to start telling the Bishop what he had to do and then one ACTUALLY WENT INTO THE TABERNACLE and took out an additional consencrated hosts and went up to the atlar pushing the bishop out of the way and started using her hands and putting them into additional containers. She then handed other extraordinary ministers the chalices and handed the bishop a ciborium. After communion these same people stood at the side of the sanctuary and consumed the rest of the blood and then took them to the bishop. so....I'm thinking I should join up. qfnol31
The Knights are the ones who seem to serve most at our parish...that or the married couples born about 40 years ago. I cannot stand what EMing has become. It about breaks my heart actually. You should talk to your Priest about this. Old_Joe
We don't have the EM's here, but that almost sounds like the laity taking over the role of priest.
Birgitta Noel
UGH UGH UGH People have no respect for bishops or for the Eucharist. May God have mercy on us.
Laudate_Dominum
EM's make be vomit. I've got a bottomless supply of horror stories. That's one's pretty darn upsetting Adam. I've even seen the Eucharist trampled at FUS quite a few times because of EM's and an obsession with Communion under both Species. But FUS is nothing compared to experiences I've had in some parishes. The common reactions when I've tried to do something about it are: total apathy; satanic rage; sheer spinelessness. Well, then there was the time the priest explained to me that belief in the Real Presence got tossed at Vatican II. I suppose that would fit in the apathy category though. But even places where people are strong Catholics use EM's too much and its not a good idea for so many reasons.
Brother Adam
agreed. Believe me things like this are not endearing to us converts. It's the height of stupidity that things like this take place. If it takes 100 years to fully impliment a council. The hundred years isn't coming fast enough. When I converted some years ago the only parish I was able to really go to regularly was the most liberal parish I've been to to date. It was not fun. I used to get into a lot of creepy debates.. It shouldn't be like that..
sweetpea316
Ok I hate to sound stupid...but I'm not down with lots of Catholic terms and whatnot yet... Soo.... EM? Huh? This whole thread was over my head but I wanna understand what's going on. Please?
thessalonian
You've got to be kidding me. That is the most prideful thing I have ever heard. I would recommend however that you first talk to the priest, give him a call or something and see if he is taking any kind of action against these people. They should definitely be removed from every Church ministry. If not, the Bishop of the Diocese definitely needs to hear about this first off. I would express your horror at the situation as a new convert. Not sure the knights is the place to go. Not sure what they could do. Perhaps better educate the parish? Perhaps the parish has a liturgy commission. Or Pastoral council. Another possibility might be a local Holy Name Society.
EM = Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (Eucharistic Minister) They are the laity who are trained in distributing communion when there are too many people for only one priest or the number of clergy present. Sadly, many parishes have an extraordinary amount of people doing this. there are often more than necessary and it is disturbing. they are meant to be servants when the load is declared too much for the priest but sometimes there are handfuls of them for even the smallest of gatherings. Adam, I think the Knights of Columbus are absolutely wonderful! We have one of the most active councils right here in Dallas and the work they do is amazing!
