how many artists on the past WYD cds have been truly Catholic music artists? how many songs have been about Mary, or the Eucharist or any real Catholic dogmas...how is Catholic music and Catholic music artists around the world, and especially in the US 2 b discovered and seriously breathed in if the powers that b have Newsboys performing one of the "theme" songs? i have nothing at all against christian-non-denominational-protestant-evangelical-whatever u wanna call it music and musicians praising the Lord...what i'm asking is if this huge Catholic event will not seek out Catholic artists 2 b apart of the musical aspect of this media...then how does Catholic music break the chains?

just a thought i had...ryan meyers, what do u think?

The WYD2002 album was entirely Catholic artists. The 2000 album was mainly Evangelical Protestants and this one for 2005 is pretty much nonCatholic.

i would rather have rough Catholic music than pretty mainstream Christian representing WYD.

I think we can get too focused on how it sounds and forget what it is saying (or not saying). Good music is important, but I think "hope" has a good point. Where is Mary, Eucharist etc...

Unfortunately, this is true...

This is the fact of the matter...

Until the sounds of Catholic contemporary music can match those of either the secular or Christian market, it will NEVER compete...

I'm talking about everything from lyrical content to overrall production...

Fact is, like Ryan said - most isn't on par...

And, most Christians bands that are hot right now have a wonderful message about Christ - so why not support them?

with all due respect...i agree with ninjakyle...we can get too focused on how it sounds and forget what it is NOT saying...it's separation of the Truth and the half-truth...i don't wanna walk away with the pharisees after Jesus tells us 2 eat His flesh...just bcuz the fullness of the Truth does not sound radio-ready, is it not still the fullness of the Truth?
i don't wanna get off the original WYD cd question, but i don't wanna dig the christian bands more than the 'C' production quality of the Catholic artists who sing of the fullness of the faith...we should champion those who may not have the gear, or studio time, or money, or players, or sometimes even talent 2 produce an up 2 par track...BUT...STILL pour out their God-given gifts 2 sing/play and proclaim the Catholic faith in all it's beauty...sometimes the Truth doesn't sound clean...ask the pharisees...

It's this vicious cycle... Protestant music is up to par BECAUSE people supported the C-quality records of yesteryear...Catholic music is not up to par because nobody has the money to produce proper sounding music. Nobody has the money because nobody is buying the cruddy sounding music. So if we don't support our own, then we'll never get up there.

i think all the good stuff is underground anyway. the more popular it gets, the more overproduced it gets.

the Christian radio stations around me just play the same 8 songs that sound like the same 3 songs.

I REALLY like priase and worship songs (mostly written by Protestants).
I also really like a bunch of the Christian rock/alt/rap stuff out there (big fan of Cornerstone music festival)

But the more I like a band, the less likely it will be popular for some reason.
Personal tastes

dont know if that fits with anything we are talking about

Haha...sure it does.

But yes, I agree with what was said about being up to par. But hopefully that will change in the future!

I'd sure like to give it a try. ^_^

just because an artist is Catholic, doesn't mean that their music will represent the fullness of Truth in a comprehensable manner. It's a cop out to say "well this song's about Mary" or "this song's about the sacraments" if it doesn't touch a person's heart. Production quality goes a long way, but the truth of the matter is that Catholic artists aren't skimming on production nearly as much as they are on the craft of songwriting. It's become too common for a person to scribble out a half-decent chorus, frame it with some half-decent verses, throw in a less-than-decent bridge that possibly includes a word or two from the liturgy, and expect Catholics to love it because it vaguely represents the mystery of our faith. This is a problem with Contemporary Christian music as well, but tenfold in the Catholic community. People will fall in love with great songs. Period. Let's not do Jesus disservice and pretend that we can squish the mystery of the Eucharist into a verse-chorus-verse. What we CAN do, however, is labor over songs to give people a glimpse of our faith; to make them curious about where these insights come from. Until Catholic artists start laboring over their craft, we will remain a step behind our Protestant brothers and sisters, and about 10 behind the rest of the music world.

OK, stepping of the soapbox now...
