hmmm maybe I should. I would also like to use Linux as well. I'm told you could rip out the hard drive and It would keep running.

Windows98SE is more stable than ME. If a computer doesn't recognize a drive, it's almost always hardware, not the OS. Check the BIOS first before you replace the OS. Depending on your computer settings, you see may see an option to press F1 when booting up. That's the BIOS.

Use Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot Search and Destroy. Both are free. Use Lava-Soft's pop up blocker. For free anti-virus, use AVG. Go to PCWorld.com to get links. I NEVER get spyware, or pop-ups, or viruses and I fix old computers and between work, home, and friends, take care of a more than a dozen computers. Use the proper software, behave yourself when you go to different sites (porn sites load more than naked pictures and there is no such thing as free screen savers or free MP3's).

I would not recommend bootleg XP, though I've used it in the past. You can't update it. To surf and do homework, you don't need much. If you want a computer to play the latest and coolest games, spend the money and do it right. You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

If you can get a legit copy of XP, I would highly recommend it. ME was the biggest mistake M$ ever made and they are still paying for it. The reason it crashes to frequently is because it maxes out all its resources, done to improper "delegation" of power on the software side. I would also recommend XP, because it has a lot of pre-installed drivers, even generic ones that would immediately find most hardware you have installed on it.

Also, as to not finding certain hardware, you either accidentally knocked out a wire or connector somewhere or your latest reformat was not able to find all of the necessary drivers.

If you need any help, feel free to drop a PM, I would be more than happy to help. I am the main computer guy that people come to at the sem and now at the rectory if they have a computer problem.

Good Luck and God Bless

Well, everything seems to be working fine now. I went ahead and got firefox. It was faster to download than to update IE5.5 to IE6. right now I can't afford to buy XP. I would if I could, but I don't have resources not for awhile anyway.

Well, I got my computer fixed finally. In fact, I'm using it right now. so far everything seems to be working okay. It's a little slow, but that's because I only have 700 Mhz. Oh well. It's better than nothing.

[quote name='Old_Joe' date='Aug 10 2005, 12:55 AM']  Windows Me was installed on it, which is about the most unstable operating system ever put out by microsoft.  So I had problems with it crashing all the time.  However, since my sister bought it straight from the maunfacturer it came with a system recovery CD.  Did I mention that when you use it, your entire system gets formatted and you lose every program, assignment, game, etc. that you ever installed or saved on it and restores the computer to its factory settings?

Makes me want to:

I KNOW.
I KNOW.
I KNOW.

OH BROTHER, DO I KNOW.

It's nice to know we are not the only ones. My housemate has the same system. It is a shame to see a grown man cry. :D:

now now. you don't hate computers, you just hate microsoft, which is understandable and it's nothing new. My dad has Windows ME and his crashed and well, he lost everything but he did save some stuff on cds.

Microsoft=smells of elderberries.
