goldenchild17
Can this be validated this somehow? I'm seeing it all over the place on google, but I need something like a lexicon or whatever to back this up. I don't see this connection. phatcatholic
in an earlier thread in the apo board we found this to be an unsubstantiated claim.

goldenchild17
We don't want to refute it. It's something that I found a LOT of people are saying online, Catholics. It would be a very good addition to the argument for the papacy(at least in my paper it would be), so I wanted to see if it was a valid claim. But unfortunately somebody made it up and now it got pretty widespread.
Laudate_Dominum
Simon (or Simeon) comes from the Hebrew word Shim'on, which means 'listening'. That's my understanding anyway.
StColette
Simon (or Simeon) comes from the Hebrew word Shim'on, which means 'listening'. That's my understanding anyway.
Found this on a website seemed really neat concerning Peter's full name Some other points: Simon is the Greek for Simeon, which is Hebrew. Simeon, or Simon, means "hearing." "Barjona" is an Aramaic word, which is the combination of two Aramaic words, "bar", and "jona". In Hebrew, "bar" is "ben", which means "son" or "son of." "Jona" or "yona" (there is no J in Aramaic or Hebrew) is both an Aramaic and Hebrew word, which, in English, is Jonah. Now yona, or Jonah, means dove. The dove was the sign of the Holy Spirit coming on Jesus at his baptism (Mat. 3:16, Mark 1:10, Luke 3:22, and John 1:32). The upshot is that Simon Barjona literally means "hearing, son of the dove." Spiritually, it means that Peter heard that Jesus was the Christ from God via the Holy Spirit!
