Harry Potter

ok, my Girlfriend is totally into Harry Potter, she's like 2 chapters away from finishing "The Half Blood Prince" and I myself love to read, and I am somewhat superstitious about if I should start reading those books?
(I can feel the seduction)

Would you view it as 'opening a door to evil'? I guess my question is If Jesus walked up to you while your reading 'Potter, would you be ashamed of it? Would you quickly hide it? And even though its fiction, do you think he would be ok with it?!

I personally would not hide the fact that I was reading HP. I am restarting the series (something I do when every book comes out). If JEsus came up to me and I was reading HP I would invite him to sit down and read with me, or invite him to point out what within HP could help me on my faith journey.

Reading HP and falling into evil depends a lot on your own mental state. I use everything I read as a tool to bolster my own faith. I have had informal faith debates with college classmates ranging from non-denominational (self labeled atheist), to new age to (shock and horror) wiccan. :scream: And Christian too! I never let anything get in the way of my faith!

Let it be known that I am also very much a SciFi fan! Star Trek Rules.

Would anyone begrudge a SciFi fan and say that Trek was a threat to faith? After all Star Trek is as secular as HP or any other non-Christian based story. Heck througout Deep Space 9 there is a Saviour motif surrounding Benjamin Sisko! :D:

I think Harry Potter is more or less as harmful as comic books. A kid who will try to cast spells because of reading Harry Potter is probably one who would jump off of a building thinking he's Superman. To anyone over the age of 12 Harry Potter will simply appear as nothing more than a fantasy tale. As far as the magic presented in the book, it is nothing like occult magic in the real world. The spells are waving a wand and saying a couple words, not drinking goats blood and long incantations. My fiancee has read all 6 thus far and has got me reading them. I'm in the middle of the second one and find it to be a great fantasy series, albeit set amongst the real world.

Meh. I wouldn't, but I also think Harry Potter is stupid, so my opinion is kind of biased. lol (I did watch the movies, they were ok, but I have zero interest in ever reading any of the books.)
