daugher-of-Mary
I went to confession on Friday, but for some reason after finishing my confession of sins, I tuned out (quite unintentionally!) and didn't hear my assigned penance. I didn't even think about it until getting to the chapel, and now I'm uncertain if I'm absolved since I've been unable to make amends through completion of the assigned penance. Pio Nono
JMJ 7/31 - Eighteenth Sunday daughter-of-Mary, It's understandable that you feel the way you do; however, the absolution was valid. I often forget my penance as well (one wonders how - the pew is thirty seconds away from the confessional, yet I still manage to forget! ). The best thing to do is just to assign yourself a penance. Hope this helps. Yours, Pio Nono
cappie
Canon law says: Can. 959 In the sacrament of penance the faithful who confess their sins to a lawful minister, are sorry for those sins and have a purpose of amendment, receive from God, through the absolution given by that minister, forgiveness of sins they have committed after baptism, and at the same time they are reconciled with the Church, which by sinning they wounded. From the above if you did not hear the penance applyed, just do one for yourself.
