Laudate_Dominum
Even if the Church says something is acceptable, She also says that Catholics don't have to believe in it. I believe that no one has to accept any private revelation.
There is a common misconception surrounding this kind of thing. While Catholics are not bound to give religious assent to private revelations as we are to formal doctrines of the Faith, this does not imply that they are not important or are to be taken lightly. They aren't just there for a select few Catholics who happen to be interested in such things. Often people seem to interpret things in a way that make private revelation unimportant. But I'd say messages from Our Lord and Our Lady directed to the world in times of crisis are quite important. And a private revelation is approved by the Church as soon as it is approved by the local Bishop. The further approval, involving Rome, really just highlights the fact that this is an important apparition worthy of recognition by the world. I believe that having an attitude in favour of the importance of private revelation is more in keeping with the authentic mind of the Church. I can't understand Catholics who are apathetic or disbelieving toward approved apparitions and things; I really do perceive it as an offense to the Church's prophetic charism. Imagine the scenario of a Catholic who believes that Lourdes was all a hoax. True they would not be guilty of heresy per se, but I wonder how they would feel celebrating the feast of St. Bernadete. Or what does a Catholic who thinks Our Lady of Guadalupe was a fabrication feel on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas? And Catholics who reject Fatima must think JP2 was a nut. Just my thoughts for what they're worth. No offense intended.
qfnol31
I don't think that private revelation is unimportant, but rather that it's importance in the role of my salvation is way too often overemphasized. I personally am skeptical of many things, and that does include private revelations. There are a few more recent ones that this includes, but I'd rather not mention them here. I trust the Church in what she does, and I believe it only includes an nihil obstat, not a requirement for me to believe in it.
