let_go_let_God
At least in my experiences of Catholic Churches, when both species are given, there are two cups, one for each side of the aisle. In my knowledge it is to prevent congestion in the lines. Perhaps it is wiser to have less Consecrated, but that is left to the discretion of the priest. Basilisa Marie
ok! I was having a huge brain blank! lol! you post reminded me of what I already knew/ forgot! Thanks! That makes me come to the question, if its just a matter of bigger picture why at my church do we allays have two cups of the precious blood which almost never is consumed by the mass participants even though it's available? I feel like many times the extraordinary ministers of the eucharist end up consuming the rest which is basically all of it minus 2-4 sips. I feel like we are putting Jesus in harms way by doing this. or maybe just disrespectful? Maybe I'm wrong again
I don't think your parish is doing any actual harm to the Eucharist by doing this, but it does seem a bit imprudent to always have so much "extra Jesus." Ideally there shouldn't be lots of "leftovers" after a mass, as well as there shouldn't have to be bunch of "leftovers" from a previous mass consumed at another mass. Practically it's good to have enough to bring to the sick and homebound, and to have some reserves so that people don't 'run out' at a future mass. But like I said, I don't think you guys are doing any harm, but it's probably not a great idea all the same. Am I making sense?
Nihil Obstat
the reason both species are encouraged these days is that it expresses the symbol of the Body and Blood more fully; one does not receive less grace receiving under only one species nor more grace receiving under both. it's the same amount of grace, just that the person who receives under both species is essentially looking at a larger painting of the Eucharist while they're receiving the grace--think of the symbol of the species as if it were a painting that you are gazing at. some people are more edified by smaller and simpler paintings and symbols while others are more edified by larger and more complex paintings and symbols. so it is with receiving under one or two species--it is like a large painting and a smaller painting, two species and one species, the symbol of bread and wine or the symbol of bread, so long as we know that Christ is not divided--the fullness of His whole Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity is present in even one tiny morsel of the host, even one tiny drop of the precious blood, so that a single crumb or a single drop would be enough to give you all the grace you would ever need.
Agreed fully. I often wonder if it wouldn't be better for the Church as a whole to slowly transition back to not offering the Chalice to the congregation. I feel like we might avoid unfortunate misunderstandings, if it were accompanied by sound catechesis.

I feel like it'd end up being more of a "withholding Jesus from the people!" riot than anything else. Although I'm pretty sure the diocese of Phoenix doesn't offer the Chalice to the people anymore, in solidarity with those diocese that cannot afford much wine. Or something.
If I recall correctly a couple diocese have decided to no longer offer the Chalice (as is their right). I think such a case is a perfect opportunity to explain how each specie is fully the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, rather than "half in one, half in the other." It can also remind the laity of the distinct role and authority of the priest. I also feel like the weight of custom has at least some bearing. Spend enough time on this site, and in church, and talking with other Catholics, and before you realize it you'll start saying impressive sounding stuff, and it won't even sound weird to you.
