Paladin D
My post was tongue-in-cheek and sarcastic - not intended to imply that every serious gamer is out-of-shape and weak, simply that mashing buttons hardly qualifies as athletic prowess in my view. Yeah, it's a skill, but gamers aren't athletes.
It's not simply mashing buttons, it involves stragedy. Chess is considered a sport, and pretty much works the same way.

mulls
so if you played chess online, would that make you a cyberathlete?
Paladin D
so if you played chess online, would that make you a cyberathlete?
It depends. If I'm correct, a golfer isn't considered an athlete (nor a chess player), even though it's a sport. Why? Since he isn't using much physical activity, stamnia, and etc, but he's a sportsman. While a cyberathlete follows the same rules, only in a more digitized version. Playing chess online wouldn't make you a cyberathlete since your player isn't using much exaggerated or intense activity, it's more about stragedy than anything else (same with IRL chess). While a player in Counter-Strike or a squad in Rainbow Six would be considered cyberathletes since their players/pawns/armies/etc are using physical activity, stamnia, and etc. In real life, some sports make people athletes while others don't; while in the video game world, some games make people athletes while others don't. For example, if I played baseball in my backyard every now and then, I wouldn't be considered an athlete; but, if I played baseball regularly on a highschool team or on the professional level, I would be considered an athlete. Same way with games, not everyone who plays Counter-Strike is an athlete (I'm not).
mulls
i guess you can just do anything aggressively online and say you're a cyber-whatever athlete, businessman, boyfriend, etc. good for those who wish they could be something in the real world but dont have the work ethic to pull it off. yes i'm a hater right now. i love video games but this has gone too far. White Knight
In some cases its a Bount Hunter game, especially when its involing killing other folks in video games to get real money. All players in that particular game are like Bounty Hunters and they are There to Collect the Prize. unfortunately it can be like that, but its also a sport at the sametime if you think about it, its just a different kind of sport.

They said the samething about digital artists, how they weren't "true artists". Look how things have changed. Just because one is pro-cyberathletic doesn't make them a slacker in anyway, nor someone who can't do anything in the "real world". It's unfortunate you're applying the "computer geek" stereotype to every hardcore gamer out there. In today's world, it's hard to tell the difference between a gamer and a non-gamer. Plus, many gamers have successful lives and families. Edited July 13, 2005 by Paladin D
