Extra ecclesiam nulla salus
no baptisim or anything? has it always been that way or is that new? what if they are recieved into the Latin rite church do they have to be baptized then? sam
Apotheoun
The practice makes no sense today, even for Catechumens. There is no mystery behind the Mass today. It is celebrated every day in every city, and anyone can attend. I suppose there could be a symbolic meaning, but if I had my druthers, it would not be practiced. Better just to have the Catechumens sit together, so that everyone knows that they are not yet prepared to receive Holy Communion.
Well, the Mass is a mystery, but I do get the gist of your comment. Because it does seem a bit artificial today to kick the catechumens out at the end of the Liturgy of the Word.

Thus, they don't need to receive any of the intiatory sacraments when they convert to the Catholic Church. They simply should be received into full communion with the Church, and receive the Eucharist (but this is not to be thought of as "first communion"). They can enter the Latin Rite, but as I understand it they always remain free to join one of the Eastern Rites at a later time.

Cam42
any tips for me if i go to a tridentine mass for the first time?
Yes, don't try to follow your daily Missal too closely right away. You will be so busy flipping around, that you may lose sight of what you're there for. The Missal will come naturally....Pay attention to the Mass....learn what the priest is doing....follow his actions. They are not all that different from the Mass today. Just more of it. And it is quieter. He doesn't speak audibly as much. Follow the congregation as to standing sitting, kneeling....don't get flustered, or frustrated. It takes time to learn the Tridentine way. It is fulfilling, but a little different from that which you are used to. God Bless.

I was speaking about the Liturgical service, not the consecration. The Eucharist is not a "secret" that is kept from pagans. We display it without hindrance, at the Church, on television, in public. For non-Catholics, there is no "mystery" behind what we do. We take a piece of bread, say some prayers, and then eat it. Big deal. But it WAS a big deal back then.
Apotheoun
I got your point. The liturgy is a mystery, but its not a secret.
