Aloysius
CHAPTER II : DAYS OF PENANCE Can. 1249 All Christ's faithful are obliged by divine law, each in his or her own way, to do penance. However, so that all may be joined together in a certain common practice of penance, days of penance are prescribed. On these days the faithful are in a special manner to devote themselves to prayer, to engage in works of piety and charity, and to deny themselves, by fulfilling their obligations more faithfully and especially by observing the fast and abstinence which the following canons prescribe. Can. 1250 The days and times of penance for the universal Church are each Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent. Can. 1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Can. 1252 The law of abstinence binds those who have completed their fourteenth year. The law of fasting binds those who have attained their majority, until the beginning of their sixtieth year. Pastors of souls and parents are to ensure that even those who by reason of their age are not bound by the law of fasting and abstinence, are taught the true meaning of penance. Can. 1253 The Episcopal Conference can determine more particular ways in which fasting and abstinence are to be observed. In place of abstinence or fasting it can substitute, in whole or in part, other forms of penance, especially works of charity and exercises of piety. so... I don't eat meat and go to adoration... err.. as long as I can remember Anyway, I have an idea... someone should purchase the domain http://www.eatlightbulbs.com and make it into a place for the new generation who likes traditional practices (the term comes from Homer Simpson, "no meat on fridays, what do they eat, lightbulbs?) I think that'd be awesome!
iggy
wait, so we are still not allowed to eat meat? i thought it was you got to pick your own friday devotion. I don't eat meat on Fridays and it drives my family nuts
Aloysius
1251 says some other food can replace it 1253 says other practices can replace it the USCCB replaced it very vague and ambiguously with any good practice in 1966 (I can't figure out how that happened before the new canon law, but whatever..) so who wants to create eatlightbulbs.com? Carnanc
what are some options besides not eating meat?. I would not eat meat, but for me people in our family already make it difficult to have a family meal, so for me that probably wouldn't be the best idea. philothea
Other options: nothing sweet/no sweeteners, no soda (or "pop", "coke".. etc, see other thread ) Have smaller portions. Skip a meal. Get right out of bed without lazing around with the snooze button. Wear some clothes that aren't comfortable. Extra prayers (especially something you find difficult). No music. No TV. No computer/internet. Wash your hands only with cold water. Take on some chore that you don't have to. Walk someplace instead of getting a ride. I don't recommend all of these at once, unless you're feeling really ambitious.
catholicflower
you can give up anything you want. Sometimes when I forget to not eat meat, I give up soda for the rest of the day ( i drink ALOT of soda) you can give up TV, the internet, or another type of food. You can also do other penaces such as cleaning for you mom. dont worry about doing another penace. I have a very low iron count and while i take vitamins nothing helps more than plain old red meat so when i am really low even if it is friday i grab some beef
