hyperdulia again
Has anyone ever heard/read that Luther didn't reject the Communion of Saints on theological grounds, but because he thought it was a dangerous distraction to the faithful? Jesus' Little Bride
From what I've gathered, many (most, all, every cotton-pickin' one) of Luther's objections were based on bad personal experiences rather than theological conclusion- judging the Faith on its practice and not theory. In this case he thought devotion to Christ's mother and the saints detracts from devotion to Christ Himself- as if God would be pleased with us if we neglected our family and neighbors in order to give constant attention to Him. In my experience with Luther's descendants who protest the Catholic Faith, their misconceptions of the Church are similarly based on prejudice or bad experiences with Catholics (mc, mc, double m c.)

EcceNovaFacioOmni
There is actually a "St. Mark's Lutheran Church" in my town. I find this strange since Luther banned Sainkt Nikolaus Abend and discouraged St. Nicholaus in Germany because he thought people were more devoted to him than to Jesus. Hence the birth of a second Christmasy celebration called Kristkindnacht in Germany. It doesn't make sense to me. Pick and choose different Saints...? hyperdulia again
he prayed to mary and preached marian sermons on her feast days, he seems to have considered her an "exception". he also commanded that an image of our lady and our lord be present in all lutheran churches. KennC
From Martin Luthers Prayer Book; "Our prayer should include the Mother of God . . . What the Hail Mary says is that all glory should be given to God, using these words: 'Hail Mary, full of Grace, The Lord is with Thee, Blessed art Thou among women and blessed is the Fruit of Thy Womb, Jesus Christ. Amen!" You see that these words are not concerned with prayer but purely with giving praise and honour. We can use the Hail Mary as a meditation in which we recite what grace God has given her. Second, we should add a wish that everyone may know and respect her . . .(Personal Prayer Book, 1522). ... I found this interesting, seems he had no intention that Protestsnts should reject Mary as they have. Peace of Christ, Ken
Anna
Seems he edited out the second half of the prayer, though, "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen."
Aloysius
actually, that part might not have even been there at his time, or at least not a popular part. The scripture part, the first part, came first. then the asking for prayer now and at the hour of our death came in. i'm not exactly sure on dates, but that could've just been how far the Hail Mary had evolved at that point. hyperdulia again
actually that part didn't exist, i think trent standardized the end of the hail mary, but before that people added a petition where we say "holy mary..."

Spiritual_Arsonist
he prayed to mary and preached marian sermons on her feast days, he seems to have considered her an "exception". he also commanded that an image of our lady and our lord be present in all lutheran churches. I have also read that Luther was close to the Vrigin Mary. Seems odd now that most Protestants ignore her.
hyperdulia again
luther was an odd duck, i think if he hhad had the good sense to foresee modern protestantism, he would've stayed in the church, could you imagine what trent would've been like with a catholic martin luther...assuming of course that trent would've been called w/out the the deformation.
