LittleLes
maybe this might work, just don't respond at all. Were it the truth, there might be an answer but it is not so just don't answer at all
RESPONSE: Unfortunately, most Catholics don't really take the time to investigate and find the 'truth." They just accept anything that the church tells them. We see the same thing in a number of other religions, unfortunately today among many of the Muslim fundamentalists. I wonder what would happen if the Pope told Catholics that slaying all infidels was God's will and they should do it? Actually, about 1200 A.D. he did! And so then they did! But that's what can happen when someone "assents" to authority. Little Les
LittleLes
An example of dissent with the Church's teachings in the past: "Late in the 17th century, Leander, a Roman Catholic theologian, wrote: "It is certainly a matter of faith that this sort of slavery in which a man serves his master as his slave, is altogether lawful. This is proved from Holy Scripture...It is also proved from reason for it is not unreasonable that just as things which are captured in a just war pass into the power and ownership of the victors, so persons captured in war pass into the ownership of the captors... All theologians are unanimous on this." And as a good Catholic following the "party line" in this case on the moral legitimacy of slavery, Leander made his mark in Catholic Theology. On the other hand: 1519: Bartholomew De Las Casas, a Dominican, argued against slavery. "No one may be deprived of his liberty nor may any person be enslaved" He was ridiculed, silenced and ignored. But that's what usually happens to dissenters in Catholicism NB. These writings can be found at the Religious Tolerance website, but they are at a number of places on the Web and, of course, in a number of history texts. Kilroy the Ninja
Perhaps if we simply hijacked the thread and talked about other more pleasant things like, I dunno.... going to the beach this summer. Or is that covered in the swim suit thread?

We had a great road trip up to Michigan last week. It was my in laws 40th wedding anniversary and all their kids and kids-in-law got up and recited something for them and most of us bawled. lol It was kind of funny in retrospect. I do something trivial in medical search and my laboratory is on the fourth floor of a research building situated on a hill with an excellent view of the valley and downtown. But I usually keep the blinds closed because I don't like bright light (neither do some of the instruments). So, at work I have the nickname "trool" also. And I haven't been a "brute troll" since I left the military, so "nerd troll" might be accurate.
LittleLes
Actually, in modern time, the Church leadership has been confused on how to handle theologians and others who dissent from the "party line." There's a problem because these theologians have frequently been proven correct and their teachings absorbed into "orthodox" Catholicism. Perhaps historically St. Athanaius is the best example (once excommunicated for heresy), with Thomas Aquinas not being far behind. Even Pope John Paul II seemed a bit confused. "A little later, he even went so far as to remark, "Truth is the power of peace....What should one say of the practice of combatting or silencing those who do not share the same views?" (More than ironically, even as a countersign, that statement was issued Dec. 18, 1979, three days after the close of the "interrogation" of Edward Schillebeeckx in Rome and on the very day of the quasi-silencing of Hans Kung.)
