there's no black space as far as I can see even on internet explorer... are you not seeing the background image? anyway, I'm movin the table up if that's what you mean.

That's what I was referring to. The table, which contained all the content, was too far down on the page. It looks better now.

And you should left or center align the nav bar and first sentence and add space between the items in the left cell.

I put in a top banner and followed a few more of your suggestions Socrates... the template is on the home page only right now

do you think the banner looks too stretched?
should I change the background?

Noel's angel

You can get better templates if you search around some of the free site hoster people things

I'm attempting to make my own template. free templates from free site hosters aren't exactly the most impressive even if it'd be a shortcut to a better looking site.

nope... gotta build the whole thing up myself. that's what I meant by saying my first ever LEGITIMATE website venture.

Noel's angel

ahh, true. You could maybe make it look a bight brighter- a lighter coloured background, different font maybe

lol... maybe I could find a way to have it spelled differently depending on which part of the world you're accessing from!

I may have to consider usin the dreaded "u"... after all... it is devoted to Chesterton and Belloc... hmmm...

Center align the banner in the top cell.

Make "Nearly the entire world . . ." a heading, give it a bright color, and center align it. Make the font something big and bold, perhaps a differnet color.

make the "If . . " statements a larger font, perhaps a different color, than the body of the text.. (perhaps even put them in a floating text box).

Don't use black or blue (or other dark text) against a dark green background (market stats and nav bar) Pad the market stats cells (they look cramped). The heading "Market Stats" should be larger than the text for the stats themselves.)

Use white or a very light color such as ivory or papyrus for the background color of your body text cell. (The overall look of the page is too dark and dim - it's all dark on dark.)

great suggestions! I have to leave it as it is for now... i have a date with a girl tonight

all-in-all the website looks 10x better than it did at the beginning of this little chat... I need to make it 100x though!

okay... what do people think of the design now? yay, neigh? step in the right direction at least?

and any comments about the content understandability would also be appreciated.

I believe the first step is to conduct a demo market. I'll be taking members who won't mind excercizing their imaginations a bit to see how this could work and help me fix any bugs that might come along the way. with a design at least decent now, I believe I will begin developing the interactive market forms and such to prepare for a demo.

you're all never going to believe the amazing dopeness of the market graphics! now I gotta work overtime to make all my complicated log in functions work securely and perhaps I can start the first demo run shortly.

seriously, you should all consider participating in a demo run. it will be loads of fun... you get to design your own little shop and pretend trade with everyone else over the market. it will be free to participate.
