drewmeister2
Hmm, Im a little confused about "ex cathedra". When the pope declares something infallible via "ex cathedra", does he need to work with his bishops in order to do this? Could anyone provide any links for me, please? I cant seem to find anything that explains it more in-depth online. Thanks!

Aloysius
Ex Cathedra is "I'm pope and this is the way it is. get in line or be a heretic"

drewmeister2
Yeah, they did, but I couldnt understand if the Pope when he acts "ex cathedra" was supposed to work with his bishops or not. Thank you for the reply!
Aloysius
nah, ex cathedra specifically means he can do it by himself, as supreme pontiff bind the entire Church in doctrine. Vatican I and II talk about it. I believe VII mentions it in Lumen Gentium

curtins
yeah when the Pope speaks ex cathedra he is speaking infallibly only on matters of faith and morals regaurding the whole chruch. He isnt wrong when he does this because he's speaking with the guidence of the Holy Spirit. I dont think he needs the bishops for that
drewmeister2
Oh, ok, thank you! So he doesnt need to call a council of bishops? Thanks!

curtins
example- Pope John Paul the great (man I miss him) did not agree with the war in iraq. This was not ex cathedra teaching- it was really his own oppion as it wasnt on matters of faith and morals and regaurding the whole church

photosynthesis
how could the War in Iraq not have anything to do with faith or morals? To me, it's a very moral issue...just as much of a moral issue as abortion, stem cell research or contraception. Anything that puts human life in danger seems like a moral issue to me.
