most of us don't think it is poorly written.

How could anyone say that lotr was poorly written, that might prompt a personal attack (which is against the forum rules that don't exist ;) )! LOTR is like the best ever. Priests could use it for like every homily in the world (there is a lot of Christian stuff in it and the rest is good advice regardless) :) Hehe, as you can tell i might be partial ....

Noel's angel

yeah, everyone is entitled to have an opinion-loads of people hate Cliff Richard, but it doesn't make a difference to me

Sweet Pea you are certainly not a loser.

There's nothing wrong with HP stories - I've enjoyed the movies and found little objectionable in them (with the exception of the use of a pentagram and the nagging feeling that people who don't use magic are losers), I simply cannot read the actual books without wanting to whip out a red pen and start bleeding all over them.

I just think it's important that children who read these books or watch the movies have a good grasp on reality and the difference between it and fantasy.

[quote name='Brother Adam' date='Jun 14 2005, 11:44 AM']Actually, Lord of the Rings breaks about every technical writing skill known. But no one is about to say that Lord of the Rings is carp. Following technical writing skills isn't everything. It's more about telling a story. And Rowling does that, and not a half bad job. Not great either, and I hate the dark thematic elements, but they aren't awful.

Tolkien can write a sentence and use proper sentence structure, Rowling cannot always seem to manage that. Her stories are mediocre at best, and her style is a rip of Roald Dawl and Tolkien now it does take a bit of skill to merge such styles but not to much she doesn't merge them that well. Her characters are shallow and her stories without depth. Butthat is just one librarian/science teacher's opinion.

Yep, because sometimes it is about telling a story and if it is good, no one gives a d*** if you can write a sentence with your commas in the write spot. Would I put her on par with Tolkien? Not in a million years. But fact is her story is not that bad. Its far better than what most people are capable of. Most cannot write a sentence much less speak correctly.
