Fides_et_Ratio
If we stick it in the Mass it is. (lol) ...other than that. I'm not sure that we could consider a type of music intrinsically evil. Thus, it doesn't really differ from anything else that can be abused when used inappropriately or in improper means.
Fides_et_Ratio
Secondly, it may have come from "bad" origins... but so did all of the egyptian (pagan) obelisks in Rome that now stand tall with crosses atop them. And then there's the Pantheon... what I can say? We Christians take things over and give them a new meaning entirely different and independent from what they once were except to say that God tops all. MichaelFilo
Satan will use all facets to blast his errors. Hip hop has been more successful than most, but it isn't evil in and of itself. God bless, Mikey
Nathan
Obviously, no genre of music, whether it be hip-hop, rock 'n' roll, jazz, or whatever, is intrinsically evil or bad. But hip-hop is a lot more than just a musical genre, isn't it? It has developed into an entire culture, a culture which sells images and attitudes and values to millions of people through various media. So, it could feasibly be argued that the "force" behind this machine, what drives it, is evil. The fruits of hip-hop culture in society, in my view anyway, have been less than great. I don't know.

Twentie Fow
The Hip Hop culture is an enemy of the Church. If you turned on MTV or BET you would see what it promotes. http://www.exministries.com/truth.html Hip Hop's Influence 1. The music – This is the number one source of influence. This is the evangelical tool for spreading the spirit of hip-hop abroad. You can easily tell when youth are into gangsta rap and explicit lyrical content. They show it in the behavior and the choices they make in life. 2. The clothing – Sagging jeans, tight fitted tops and bottoms, gang related outfits, prison attire. These are the clothes that hip hop influences our teens to wear freely. What was once considered appropriate only for prostitutes and hardened criminals is now acceptable attire for our youth! 3. The markings – Tattoos, piercing, strange hairstyles, gold teeth, vicious jewelry (dragons, dogs, snakes, etc) and the crucifix are all products of the hip hop culture. The devil wants our children marked like Cain, to show their pledge of allegiance to rebellion and self-gratification. These marking follow our youth and make it very hard to convert them back to their original identity. 4. The mentality – Hip-hop causes youth to be rebellious. To use foul language in public. To commit very strong sexual acts with other youth. To feel they have nothing to lose. To give up on their “good” values and take on the negativity of the hip hop culture. The message of Hip Hop a. Prison is a good place. To be arrested and beat the rap makes you a hero. b. Teen pregnancy is accepted as the norm. c. Sex is good. Getting VD is not even frowned upon. Having multiple partners okay. d. Homosexuality and Bi Sexuality is normal and accepted. e. Serving God and sin together is the norm. f. God forgives sin, so it’s okay. g. Foul language and physical abuse is accepted. h. Bad grades in school are okay. i. Using drugs and drinking is accepted. j. Murder is good thing, if you deserve it. k. Choosing a god other than Jesus Christ is okay. l. Love is just a word. m. Being a thug is cool. Looking like you just robbed a bank is the norm. n. The white man is not fair and holds the black man down. o. Church, the bible, preachers, etc. are not needed. We can learn on our own. p. XXX behavior is accepted and preached lyrically in the music. q. Anything goes, as long as you are feeling it. If you all knew how High Schools were these days. The Hip Hop culture started in the inner city and it has spread to the suburbs. It now has a griphold on American Youth. Does this sound like something the Church would be ok with? FutureSoror
I'm sorry but did you say that the crucifix is a product of hip-hop culture?? I'm not sure what I think about hip-hop. It's not my favorite genre, but I don't think it is intrinsically evil. I suppose the devil could use it as a tool. Maybe he has. I agree that the culture isn't promoting good values, but the music itself being evil I'm not sure about.
FutureSoror
I'm not rarely listen to secular music, and don't listen to Christian music that much either, myself, although I prefer it over the mainstream stuff. Give me some good piano music, Irish/Celtic instrumentals, and Gregorian Chant any day. I've kind of backed off the the music scene in that way, partially because of some of concerns I have with the music, some of which are talked about on that site. Like I said, though, I'm sort of undecided on the issue.

Fiat_Voluntas_Tua
i think some of those points are funny / invalid... m. Being a thug is cool. Looking like you just robbed a bank is the norm. n. The white man is not fair and holds the black man down. h. Bad grades in school are okay. a. Prison is a good place. To be arrested and beat the rap makes you a hero. Just thought I would add my 2 cents... That isn't the message rap / hip-hop sends... that is the effect it has on society (however, I am not sure about the bad grade one.) In the words of John Reuban (I don't know how to spell his last name) "Do not tell me what I can and what I can't do when I rock." I will revise St. Francis's quote, "Preach the Gospel at ALL times, use Hip-Hop if neccesary." Totus Tuus, Andrew Joseph
