Paphnutius
This guy is still riding the same misunderstandings and misconceptions that most other anti-Catholic people do. And this sentence hit a nerve!
The Catholics believe we cannot confess our sins to God directly, but instead have to recite them to a pedophile intermediary, despite the fact that the Bible never suggests this.
:angered: Edited May 30, 2005 by Paphnutius
Mateo el Feo
LandoverBaptist.org is a parody website, authored by non-Christians who pretend to be fundamentalist Christians. The site is designed to mock religion in general. [edit: i am allowing the name of the site to remain here so that, if anyone else comes upon it, they will know what we speak of, and the true nature of it] Edited May 31, 2005 by phatcatholic
Qoheleth
It's a joke website (although a tasteless joke), but many of the charges are those commonly brought against Catholics, although this writer manipulates the Scriptures more than most, providing an excellent example of what can happen when the KJV is the only source used.
First, they worship mortals, something God expressly admonished against. Catholics claim to love Jesus and claim to believe in the Holy Trinity. But they don’t limit their worship to God, as the Bible demands (Exodus 20:3). ... This is idolatry, pure and simple. The Bible orders us not to pray to dead men (Psalms 106:28), and Jesus instructs us not to pray to angels (Colossians 2:18).
Catholics distinguish between worship and prayer. Worship, as the writer rightly writes, is God's alone. But Catholics do not worship the saints, instead, we communicate with them through prayer. Communication, even honor, is not worship. Ps 106:28 refers to dead "gods," not "men." "Dead gods" is one of the ways in which idols are referred to in the bible. (The KJV simply states "sacrifices of the dead," although later, even Protestant, translations, say "dead gods." Either way, Catholics do not worship the dead. Col 2:18 states that angels ought not to be worshipped; again different from prayer. Additionally, prayers for the dead are explicitly mentioned, and praised, in 2 Maccabees 12:38-46.
They actually bow before and pray to statues
Simply false.
The Catholics believe some people neither go to Heaven nor Hell, but instead wind up in an imaginary fantasyland they call “purgatory” (even though there is no such place described in the Bible).
1 Cor 3:12b-15 -- "It [man's works] will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each one's work. If the word stands that someone built upon the foundation, that person will receive a wage. But if someone's work is burned up, that person will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only through fire.
The Catholics believe we cannot confess our sins to God directly, but instead have to recite them to a pedophile intermediary, despite the fact that the Bible never suggests this.
Jesus, speaking to his disciples (i.e. the antecedents of the Church): "Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are reatined." John 20:23 James 5:16 -- "Confess your sins to one another."
They think, in order to be forgiven of sin, we have to recite rote prayers over and over (like some elementary school kid ordered to write, “I will not talk in class” 100 times on the blackboard), even though such nonsense finds no support in the Bible.
Psalm 136: the phrase "God's mercy endures forever" occurs in each line. His statements about the Pope do not merit quoting, but the Catholic Church places limits on what can be considered infallible. Only statements made ex cathedra on faith and morals are considered infallible. The statements about homosexuality are supported by another article on this cruelly facetious site; I won't respond to them, as most of the people mentioned in the second article are entirely fictional. This article was a joke, but the arguments against it work either way.
toledo_jesus
that site is so awful...but it is somewhat interesting to read the upset e-mail responses. the last one for April 2005 is particularly Christian I think. and i'm being so very sarcastic.
