shoot, just enjoy yourself. you'll be flying man. i just flew for the first time last august. went down to Florida the same day that big ol' hurricane first hit. power was out pretty much the whole time. Anyway, it was pretty awesome when I first took off cause you can see so much of the area. It seems a lot bigger when you're on the ground. Plus, you get to go up into the clouds and that is neat.

After two trips to Japan I have no great love of airplanes anymore.
I do have a tip though (although this may be specific to Northwest, I'm not sure).
If you can do an online checkin you may be able to choose your seat ahead of time. If you pick a seat directly in front of the big projector screen (that doesn't have another row of seats in front of it and isn't the exit row) you can gain about an extra foot of leg room. I don't think I could have survived the thirteen hours in flight had I not done this.

My tip for you would be to enjoy yourself. Flying is amazing. Realizing that you're shooting through the air at mach 0.84 is quite an experience. And, as already previously mentioned, try to get a window seat.

Here is a website that's operated by a Boeing 777 Captain. He addresses alot of questions with regards to flying: ask captain Lim

Man I'd like to have his job!

DO NOT:

Speak arabic (last time I did that they searched me and acted like they thougt I was hispanic).
SAY YOU HAVE A BOMB (Sure it might be funny but they don't have that sense of humor over there...)
WEAR A BELT WITH METAL ON IT(Kinda emberrasing taking ur belt off... I guess).
LEAVE YOUR BAGS IN A RANDOM AREA HOPING FOR THE KINDNESS OF OTHERS TO NOT STEAL IT (Especially in France).
DO NOT BRING A BOXCUTTER OR ANYTHING SHARP AT ALL.

DO
Pray right before takeoff and landing.
Bring your Cd player and anything possible to keep you busy (Well thats what I do since I always fly for about 18 hours...)
Tell the flight attendant to save ur breakfast/lunch/dinner if you fall asleep (do this if you have more than a 5 hour flight).

wear flip flops with soles thinner than .5"(not sure if that is the exact number)- if you are wearing skinny flip flops, they don't take your shoes, and the booty things are a bit odd. definatly chew gum. if you are on a 777, count your blessings, because they are very comfy and there are screens on the back of every seat, so you don't have to watch whatever movie they are watching. don't bring anything remotly scissor-like. on a flight out of france someone i was with had a metal eyelash curler with her, and it took them FOREVER to figure out what it was that was scissor shaped. pack your own snacks for the pre-flight hours. if it is not a friday, my personal favorite is beef jerky. I personally talk to the people next to me on the flight. especially if they are younger than you or seem scared... even if you are scared, talking to them makes both of you feel better. I always ask for the rest of my pop can, and a lot of times the pop can looks cooler than what you could get on the gound. always be nice to the flight attendant, you never know if the some of other passengers are meanie heads. if you are going to recline your chair, make sure the person behind you is not using it, and if they are, negotiate before you squish their knees/ computer screen... also if the person in front of you is squishing your knees, don't be afraid to tell them.

Try to get an exit row seat as they usually have a few more inches of leg room.

Dress comfortably and wear shoes that can be taken off and put back on without too much hassle.

If you are very big the best seats are either the window or the aisle seats. (I prefer the aisle) The middle seats are the worst.

If you look out the window and see a weird looking gremlin trying to destroy the wing, don't bother to tell the flight attendant. She will think you are a kookoo-head and call for an ambulance to take you to a psych ward upon touch down. You will be right, though, there will be a gremlin on the wing. No one will believe you, however. If you don't believe me, ask William Shatner.

i agree....i've got long legs and i ALWAYS want the aisle seat. i'd kill for the view of the window seat, but my legs are much happier on the aisle :D

That is exactly how I am. I'm 6'1" 220 lbs so needless to say airline seats were not designed for me. I'm just glad I'm not any bigger than I am. I like the aisle because I can lean my shoulder out into it and stretch my leg out into it when no one is coming by. But watch out for the drink cart.

If you happen to be on a flight with small children aboard, be extra kind to them and their parents. It's really hard to travel with children and 99% of the time, when someone makes eye contact with the parents, it's to shoot them one of these : <_< even if the child is doing nothing wrong. Sort of a warning...

and pay attention to those around you... sometimes the person with the seat next to you is with someone who is on the other side of the plane, and they wouldn't mind sitting next to them ;)

i got stuck in the very back row of an airplane once and my knees were firmly pressed into the seat in front of me....that was on continental from philly to houston...it was a long flight to be so squished....
