Well I guess it'd be nice just to have a thread for guitar players and those who want to learn.

The main reason for me starting this is because i started to teach myself a while ago but i can never really play anything well because i have trouble with finger movement. i cant ever land on the chord im looking for fast enough. i know it takes practice but is there anything i can do to make it easier on myself?

I really enjoy guitar a lot and I can't wait to be good at it.

I taught myself the guitar. I would suggest, before trying to play a song along with the recorded version, listen to it first to get the rythmn and then try it ourself, without listening to the song. Then you can start of slowly and build up tempo. Try simple exercises like moving from one chord to another and don't move on to another chord until you have got it right. I would also not try to learn too many chords at once cause then you will just get all mucked up and confused.

I'm no expert or anything, but I'm pretty competent now :)

you should get one!! theyre pretty cheap used and sometimes youll find some nice used ones that arent too terribly beat up.

you can get cheap beginner guitars pretty much anywhere. I'd start with a cheaper model to make sure you're gonna stick with it.

Sometimes I still get D and G mixed up- I know in my head that I want D and I tell my fingers to move to D, but they have a life of their own sometimes....

I think it helps if you have a musical background-it makes it easier to know which notes you should be playing, tuning and chord structure

I would first suggest getting a guitar Miriam.

;)

It is said that the guitar is an easy instrument to learn but a difficult one to master. I couldn't agree more. From a teacher's perspective, I would always suggest lesson especially at the beginning. Its really really easy to pick up bad habits that will hold you back as you want to get better.

But if you aren't gonna get lessons heres a couple of hints.

Use your fingertips for forming all first postion chords (which is all chords you learn first starting out)

SLOOOOOOOOWWWW AND SMOOOOOOOTH

I never care how slow a student plays a song as long as it is consistent. You can always speed things up but one thing is always true

Fast and carpy is still carpy.

all the better! I play my dad's guitar at the moment, I love it. I'm trying to find a picture of it-it has the really cool design with the birds and all on it on the scratch plate. David McWilliams played it on TV....
