Wrong, mortal or venial?

Okay, we were taking a test with essays. The question was to analyze how much these movements affected American society. I had choices on what to write about. One of these choices was the women's movement.

We had to pick two out of three...and I picked the women's movement, because I didn't know much about the third. I said it had a good bit of effect, because Roe v. Wade made abortion legal, and and I mentioned feminism, and that these things were becoming increasingly accepted. I said there was opposition to it from conservative Protestants and Roman Catholics but that it still had a big impact on our society.

I talked about these sins in a neutral context, then. But the other one I chose from the three was the civil rights movement, and how much effect it had. Not exactly the best overall context.

I didn't say it was a good thing and to the best of my ability I used neutral language. But still. I could have picked something else.

Did I commit a mortal sin? :sadder:

Noel's angel

you had to write an essay-you wrote what the examiners want to read, don't worry about it

It wouldn't have hurt my grade even I did fail it.

I just feel bad because I could have picked something else, and I didn't.

I agree. No big deal at all. You did the test you were given to the best of your ability. Be happy. I hope you get a good grade. :)

I think one should write an essay without having to give examiners what they "want to read," if it goes against your principles, though. I think one could mention the womens movement and speak of what good it's done without mentioning Roe. But when someone means "impact" there is also certainly a lot of negative impact from a womens' movement as well.

I would be concerned if you wrote of Roe being potentially "good," (it all would have a lot to do with wordage... stating neutrally that this is considered "good" to feminists but offensive to Catholics wouldn't be wrong. Stating that Roe was "good" in itself would be wrong.) I would suggest going to confession to ease your mind. I don't know what kind of judgement call to make regarding the gravity, but it doesn't sound like you intended to do anything gravely wrong.

One time I got in a discussion with someone many years ago about abortion. It was a really tense discussion about population in the world, and I blurted something about populations being larger from not having birth control (I was attempting to imply that birth control wasn't as bad to control population as abortion... that was what I was erroneously thinking at the time...) and afterwards I felt so dumb, and don't know why I really said that. I guess because I was so freaked out at the time. It was a really awful conversation to begin with, because someone I knew was telling me that they had had more than one abortion, and I was in a complete state of shock.

I went to confession anyway, at the very least because I realized I needed to be more prepared for conversations like that.....

Perhaps discussing this test question this close to the exam is a problem. Don't worry, it can be our secret

I do not think that the matter was grave enough, most likely, but only God can tell you that.

Also do you think that you said something untrue? And do you think that what you wrote would encourage some one not to convert?

No, I don't think so Theoketos.

And fmjag -- I worried about that too, but I didn't say what test it was or even disclose the whole question. And this is really, really important, as it concerns my eternal soul. You know?

Do you think I said too much fmjag?

I had to write about the two heretics, King Henry VIII and Martin Luther in my AP test today. I held nothing back. They are heretics, their errors I mentioned, and I hope a Protestant reads it.

God bless,
Mikey

Which is why I feel guilty that I didn't do what you did, Michael. I feel like I sold God out for a grade. If I did, I hope I fail.

At least it isn't mortal.

No, not at all. As soon as I read your post, I recognized what it was from becuase I wrote on the same essay, but I chose the other 2 options (not women).
I really didn't have anything to add that wasn't already said, so I limited my post to that. Sorry if you misunderstood what I was trying to say.
