The Souls In Purgatory

KMS, that should be "Lefsa Likos" and "Whiskey Donna."

You're welcome, precioussessesssssss.

Sincerely,

The nasty little hobbit.

M. Sigga, PLEASE? PRETTY PLEASE?

Post the Novena to the Holy Souls!

AND, out first intent should be to help them!

Often when I pray for the suffering souls, I ask them to pray for whatever intentions. Either I spell out each one, or if exhausted I say, "Please ask God to tell you what they are." Girls get too involved in speech sometimes!

Oh- the reason the Church cannot officially (in her public worship) address prayers to the Souls in Purgatory for their intercession is because since they are not yet Saints in heaven, she cannot officially venerate them (as w/ the saints).

But in private, go for it.

'Tis a large, large family, precious.

Jake, you're in my prayers.

Prior to this thread, I was unsure of whether or not the Holy Souls in Purgatory could pray for us. Once Likos posted what Dr. Ott had to say, uncertainty was gone. In order to disagree with him, I would have to be able to argue against him, and Lord knows I could never even begin to do that!

So I'm glad to know that the Holy Souls can inDouche pray for us.

"The practice of recommending to God the Souls in Purgatory, that He may mitigate the great pains which they suffer, and that He may soon bring them to His glory, is most pleasing to the Lord and most profitable to us. For these blessed Souls are His eternal spouses, and most grateful are they to those who obtain their deliverance from prison, or even a mitigation of their torments. When, therefore, they arrive in Heaven, they will be sure to remember all who have prayed for them. It is a pious belief that God manifests to them our prayers in their behalf, that they may also pray for us. It is true these blessed Souls are not in a state to pray for themselves, because they are, so to speak, criminals atoning for their faults. However, because they are very dear to God, they can pray for us, and obtain for us the Divine graces. St. Catherine of Bologna, when she wished to obtain any grace, had recourse to the Souls in Purgatory, and her prayers were heard immediately. She declared that, by praying to those holy souls, she obtained many favors which she had sought through the intercession of the Saints without obtaining them. The graces which devout persons are said to have received through these holy Souls are innumerable. --St. Alphonsus Liguori

"If we knew how great is the power of the Holy Souls and how many graces we can obtain from God through their intercession, the souls in Purgatory would not be forgotten. Let us pray for them that they may pray for us." (St. John Vianney, The Cure d'Ars)

Ok, I have just had a "development of thought." I used to think that the Holy Souls could not pray for us, they certainly CANNOT pray for themselves, so I thought, that they couldn't pray for us either. I could disagree with Fr. Ott (though it's probbaly unwise) but I cannot disagree with St. Alphonsus and St. John Vianney . . . I submit.

After a bit of reading up, I am thoroughly convinced that the souls in purgatory can pray. Looking back, I can see how childish and stupid I was to think any differently. How good it is to be reproved and disciplined! Thanks be to God, I am a better man for it.
