Monica
OK, I still have issues with intercession. Of Mary or saints. If a child wants to get something from it's father, do you think the father would prefer that child go straight out and ask him himself, or slink around and hide behing sibling's backs, and ask them to ask their father for them. I would prefer the first one, and not be too sympathetic with the latter. Just something to think about. ;)
willguy
Monica, see this month's "Squash the Bunkness." It may help (yay for shameless self-promotion). Anyways, the problem is that asking for intercession is not slinking around behind the Father's back. See, #1, anything we ask the Saints/Mary for intercession for we also pray for ourselves. Is asking your friends to pray for you slinking around behind God's back? No, and neither is asking the Saints/Mary for intercession. They aren't an ends. They are a means. To go with your analogy, it'd be like there is something you want to ask your Father, but instead of just going by yourself, you go with your siblings and Mother. Katholikos
Monica, Prayers to Mary and the Saints are as old as Christianity. Prayers to St. Peter are carved on his tomb. Prayers to the saints are carved in the catacombs on behalf of the dead who were buried there, including on the tombs of the martyrs. A prayer to Mary was found on a Greek payprus dating from 250 A.D. Protestants are sadly disconnected from Christian history. We pray to Mary and the Saints because we have always done so, for the past 2,000 years. It's part of our culture, our heritage, our ancestry. "To be deep in history is to cease to be a Protestant" John Henry Newman, former Anglican clergyman and convert to Catholicism. JMJ Likos

Katholikos
Likos!!!! You've Father Damien for your avatar... Monica, may God give you His choicest graces. Yes, thanks to Anna and her computer genius daughter, Ice Princess. In this small way, I hope to promote devotion to this holy priest, who was such an important influence in my life. With a tip of the hat and a hug to Baby Damien, and may Father Damien bless us all . . . JMJ Likos

Katholikos
Father Damien? Monica, have you read my signature (below the dotted lines) about Father Damien? He's now Blessed Father Damien, under consideration for sainthood. If you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer them.
