Diocese of Joliet

Alright, pham.. Here's Katrina asking for more advice on colleges....

Right now I'm seriously considering the Univ. of St. Francis in Joliet, IL. It seems to offer exactly the type of academics I'm looking for, in a city that's a great size and the perfect distance from home.

However, I'm scared to death because I've heard that the Joliet diocese is terribly liberal and unorthodox. I was told this morning that last year they had ONE ordination in their diocese (read: almost NO vocations).

When I visited the campus, they seemed to have a very strong Campus Ministry program, which does a lot with mission trips and social justice work. However, I attended a Mass on campus said by their chaplain (a Franciscian priest), which was the most TERRIBLE Mass I've ever seen!! I don't even think the consecration was valid. :sadder: I know there's a cathedral within walking distance from campus, however, so I wouldn't have to attend the school's daily Mass.. but still, I don't know how much of a reflection this priest is on the rest of the school (it's his first year as chaplain)

So, I'm really torn. The school has most everything going for it, except for it's Catholicity. (or lack, thereof) I'm really drawn to it, and it FEELS right, I feel comfortable there. But I don't know whether that's my intuition talking or my passions. I don't know whether to trust that gut feeling. And I keep telling myself, "You're strong enough in your beliefs to not be affected by it, and if you went to a secular school, you'd be facing even harder trials" but I just don't know....

Anyways, I figured maybe someone here would have some experience with the school or at least with the diocese? Maybe? Anyone?? :(

Thy Geekdom Come

I don't know about the whole of Joliet, but I know a few seminarians from Joliet and they're pretty orthodox. I also know a priest from Joliet and he's orthodox (although he did spend some time and heard his calling while in school in Lincoln).

I wouldn't go to a school with an unorthodox Mass...especially if you weren't even sure of its validity.

First of all, what, specifically, makes you think it was invalid? Secondly, I am in seminary with three seminarians from Joliet. They are all outstanding men who will make fantastic priests someday.

I'm from the diocese of Joliet. St. Francis is about 10 miles east of my house. I can't speak for sure about the diocese as a whole (I've only ever been to my home parish, St. Mary Immaculate), but I'd say it's a good bet it's liberal because it's all I've ever heard. Fortunately, Bishop Joseph "Put in that I laughed" Imesch is retiring soon because of old age.

Take a look at Lewis University. Or, if you want to get out of the Joliet Diocese, Northern Illinois' Newman Center has probably the most Conservative Priest in the Rockford Diocese...Father Michael Black.

My question is what diocese are you already in? You're surrounding dioceses would be Chicago, Peoria, and Rockford. Chicago is the most liberal of all these four. Rockford and Joliet are all pretty much the same in terms of liberal/conservative with Joliet being just a little more conservative. and then Peoria is mildly conservative...so I guess I'm a little stunned that you'd say Joliet is liberal when you're probably in a more liberal diocese already.

You should be more careful about criticizing your bishop. He is your spiritual father and one of God's Top Ten is "Honor thy Father and Mother."

I'm in the "mildly conservative" Peoria diocese. ^_^ (Which I'd have to argue that I've seen nothing but orthodoxy here, plus we get to claim Fulton Sheen, so boo-yah! ;))

This priest made up his own Eucharistic Prayer and sung it to the tune of the Celtic Alleluia. I don't recall specifically hearing the words "This is my Body," "This is my Blood," so that's why I'm questioning it's validity.

yeah, I'd have to know the exact words to make a judgment. That is definitely borderline though. If he made up his own words, it is certainly illicit, but as long as he left in "This is my body, this is my blood" it is valid. Singing it is no problem though. Chanting the EP is actually preferred.

I suppose that every place has its good priests and bad priests. My suggestion is that it is better to not judge the entire diocese off of one experience. Heck, I used to go to school in Lincoln, NE, which is supposedly the best diocese in the United States, and I have even seen some liturgical innovation there, not as much as in most places, but some.

Like you, I hate liturgical innovation. However, pray about it, hang in there. Archbishop Timothy Dolan was here speaking the other day, and one thing he emphasized was that many Catholics today have lost hope. DON'T LOSE HOPE! If God wants you to go to this school, then follow his will.

Schaumburg? No way! I work for the Kane County Cougars, they're the only Minor League Team I go for! Lewis University home of the Flyers. It's the school I'm attending right now.

Just cuz he's a Bishop doesn't free him from criticism. I have Bishop Doran, who I've actually been known to have called him Bishop Moran. He is extremally anti-social, and even once grunted at me as I said hello to him. (This is not why i dislike him, he's done several things that are upsetting and disturbing.)

Anyways, you should honor your mother and father, but my family is pretty messed up and share our love through ridicule. My Nana who is 62 years old is better known as Ugly, shortie, stupid, and a few others that shouldn't be mentioned.

At the same time, the Bishop is still human. Still free to make many mistakes. Still free to be stupid. If he does, we, as other humans have the right to make the observation and call it what it is. If we observe this conduct on several occasions, then the observations become more and more factual. So, if the Bishop is a moran, so be it. I am not dishonoring him, just saying it for what it is.

Love, Peace, and Chicken Grease

I've decided on Saint Francis. I'm not sure why, and I suppose I can always transfer if it doesn't work out.. but I gotta follow my heart. :)
