Fidei Defensor

Yep, we were here frantically working on a way to get it. Luckily, someone bought it for 2,000 dollars before we could, and emailed us to say he is talking it back to where it should be - a church.

Thy Geekdom Come

Look at the things that guy says about ebay's policies...I want an ebay boycott...disrespectful postings should also not be allowed.

Ash Wednesday

It is unfair that they will pull auctions that sell mormon undergarments that they believe to be sacred, yet will not respect what we as Catholics hold sacred.

I think a petition asking them to include selling the Eucharist as part of the "offensive material" policy wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

Here's the link to an online petition about this. Please forward it on to spread the word -- the more signatures the better!

Ash Wednesday

They asked me to fill out a survey with their customer support response. I gladly obliged:

Just because people working for ebay are "Catholic" doesn't somehow make ebay's handling of the issue "okay." Any Catholic working for ebay ought to request a change of policy or else quit working for you.

I do believe the Eucharist SHOULD be included in the "offensive content" policy. I feel this way NOT just about Catholicism -- other religions deserve that same courtesy -- be it Mormon undergarments or anything similar. If it is an object considered sacred and protected with one's religion, it shouldn't be on here. And the argument of "it's not illegal to sell, so it's fine with ebay" doesn't hold weight at all. If I'm not mistaken, selling Nazi items isn't illegal in the U.S. either. I can certainly see why it's not permitted on ebay, and I'm fine with that. To Catholics, selling a Eucharist IS an inflammatory act towards Catholics and Catholicism. Those who oppose Catholicism -- such as satanists, will take Eucharist hosts EXACTLY for the purpose of attacking Catholics and Catholicism. The fact that it's on the market makes this possible.

I don't think a simple change of adding that to the policy is too much to ask. Otherwise you will have Catholics  unjustly forced to shell out money for the sake of defending the integrity of their religion.[/quote]

They asked me at JUST the right time, because I am REALLY cranky today.

Do you think we could start a thread about this petition and perhaps even get it pinned?

  • 4 weeks later...

I just signed the petition. Until I saw this thread today I had no idea how low people had gone in trying to make money off JPII's death. This is very sad, very very sad.

May God grant justice.

On the ligther side, over 47 000 signatures so far (for those of you who might not have checked recently).

and the comment below seems to signify that ebay will change the policy:

Update from a letter from eBay to an author of a similar petition: "We understand that the listing of the Eucharist was highly upsetting to Catholic members of the eBay community and Catholics globally. Once this completed sale was brought to our attention, we consulted with a number of our users, including members of the Catholic Church, concerning what course we should take in the future should a similar listing appear on our site. We also consulted with members of other religions about items that might also be highly sacred and inappropriate for sale. As a result of this dialogue, we have concluded that sales of the Eucharist, and similar highly sacred items, are not appropriate on eBay. We have, therefore, broadened our policies and will remove those types of listings should they appear on the site in the future." This petition will not close, though, until eBay actually puts the Eucharist on the list of prohibited items for sale.
