Extra ecclesiam nulla salus
if anyone asked me for a rosary, i would give it to them in a second. It never really comes up. But the thing is i also am very much attached to my favorite rosary ( I have two). But I think it is very true what jezic said:
What good are things blessed by people if you do not part with them? Then do you possess the object? Does it become yours? (this would be attaching to material things. ) If you are not ready to bless someone else with your blessing that you have, then you should not have it.
I think that summaries life as a christian. IamCatholic
I have never really given one away if I can remember correctly, but extra eclesiam nula salus, what does that mean? Is that Latin? What does your name mean? Edited April 11, 2005 by IamCatholic

jgirl
I haven't given away any rosaries, but I give away my crucifixes. If somebody tells me they like one I am wearing and they aren't wearing a cross, then I will ask them if they will wear it, and if they say yes, then I give it to them. Ash Wednesday
There are some I could give away. My problem is I get sentimentally attached to them. I know, I smell of elderberries. I couldn't give away my first communion rosary, my mother's rosary, or my grandmother's. If I have kids I want to pass those on to them. But I do have some I could part with. Are there any rosary donation programs out there?

Jaime
This is an interesting thread. Being a new Catholic, I didn't know that giving rosaries away was a "thing". I think it's really cool! But I have a couple of questions: --Do you end up giving them mostly to Catholics (former, lapsed, whatever) or to non-Catholics? Do non-Catholics freak out when you try to give them to them? (I've given out a few holy cards to non-Catholic friends--JPII, Terese of Lisieux--but I try to keep it low-key, since I'm formerly-protestant and they're all protestant.) --Do you give people (or direct them to) something describing the prayers? I had to download the electronic version to figure out how it worked (not every description out there makes sense to the non-Catholic). --Do you give out expensive ones? Or do you keep cheaper ones on hand? (Not that I have a problem with giving away an expensive one, but if it was $30 every time, that might become impractical, you know?) MG
Well for me, I'm not proactive in the whole "Hey take my rosary" thing. It just seems to happen. I've given them to lapsed Catholics, non Catholics, good Catholics, whoever. No one has ever visibly "freaked out". Its never a hardsell thing. Its more like "This really works for me, wanna try it?" I don't think anyone has ever said no. And like I said, its usually in a time of crisis for them. If they aren't familiar with how the rosary works, I'll give them a quick tutorial then tell them to "Go forth and Google". I don't usually keep many rosary cards on me. And yes, I've given away some pretty pricey ones and I've given away some pretty sentimental ones. Ones from Medjugorje, Rome, etc. But its not like I put a lot of thought into it. Its an opportunity you know? Also, and I have to be honest about this, I beat up rosaries pretty good. So its usually a good thing that they're going to gentler prayers than myself. If they stick with me, they are going to break.

One thing you can do is maybe put them next to the statue of Our Lady along with small "How To Pray the Rosary" instructions! There are some awesome ones from newadvent.org too. I used to pray the rosary with the elderly people at the assisted living homes and we would give them our rosaries to pray with since a great deal of them didn't have any ... so thats another idea! <3 Mel
