so wait..

you're allowed to copy a tape with a tape recorder cause the taper recorder companies pay royalties to the music industry?

so you'd be allowed to copy a CD onto a tape using a tape recorder and share it with your friends?

but you can't copy a CD onto a CD with a burner since burner companies don't pay royalties?  or DO THEY?  cuz i bet when burners were invented it was pretty evident THEY, not the computers but the burners, were a copying tool, right?

i'm gonna invent a new phrase right here, right now.  it's called non-profit commercial sale.  it's like what they do at Kazaa, which is like opening up a store with all copied versions of your own CD's and putting a big sign out front that says "Free CD's"  that's non-profit commercial sale.  that is what should be immoral/illegal.  however, copying a CD and letting a friend borrow it, is that illegal?  or is it only legal if you copy it with a tape recorder like the previous questions?

 anyone know enough to answer that?

anyone wanna answer my questions?

alright i'll put em more clearly

1) are we allowed to copy stuff by recording it onto tapes since the taperecorder makers paid royalties to the music industry?

2) are we allowed to copy CD's by recording them onto tapes then?

3) so we're not allowed to copy CD's with a burner since burner making companies didn't pay royalties to the music industry?

4) are we allowed to copy a CD to let a friend borrow it, just not this non-profit commercial sale?

5) how come i keep typing non-prophet commercial sale?

B)

Aloysius,

I catch your drift on what you are saying. It does seem like a double edged sword when you think about it..why did I buy my 52x CD Burner if when I make a copy of something its illegal? My guess is, its not illegal to do that.

Pirating in itself is illegal, but how do you define Pirating? Yo-ho-ho..no not that type. A person who Pirates software will download full working packages and turn around and sell them as if legit packages of software for almost half the price. Real Piraters even go to the extent as to burning the original graphic of the real CD onto the illegal copy of the CD and making it look legit. These are the types of people the Federal Government are out to get.

That is an example of a 'Real Pirate'.

As for most of us. We dont go to that extent. I myself only copy software for personal use. I have given copies of my software to my friends because it was the latest and greatest stuff and they thought it would be cool to check it out. No where did I sell it or get anything in return for my gift to them.

But the illegal part of what I was doing was the mere fact that I kept the software longer than 30 days on my computer.

Ok, I just wrote all this only to realize that I was writing about software and not music, which is held differently..so, um..I dont wanna delete it, ive worked so hard on typing it..so um..yea :P

TempleofVesarius

borrowing from Jack Black

"rock music is about sticking it to the man"

the man in this case, the record companies.

I dont support record companies plain and simple, because they rip off the listeners, trick people into listening to whats "cool" or "hot". Forget about that, music is about art.

If its an artist I like, I will buy the cd, to support the artist. If im so so or whatever...im not going to pay 20 bucks for a cd when it costs them about 30 cents to produce, and about 2 bucks goes to the artist. Scrizzle that.

How is it a sin to line the pockets of these rich record execs who could care less about the MUSIC???

Most of the music i listen to is underground, or unreleased, so my only option for the most part is to download. Good luck finding a Mike Doughty CD in northern new york.
