argent_paladin
"And yes, you are a Bishop before a pope, DUH!" If you had read carefully, you would have seen that I didn't state the obvious. I said that you must be ordained a bishop before you become a Cardinal. Avery Cardinal Dulles is titular bishop of SS. Nome di Gesù e Maria in Via Lata, a suburbican see outside of Rome. This is required of all Cardinals. But you are correct, Dulles seems to be the exception to the rule. His episcopacy seems to be honorary. "the fact that it is not an election...The Holy Spirit does the work, the Cardinals simply respond to the grace...and WHOOPY, we have a new pope. " Again, incorrect. The Holy Sprit "assists". The Cardinals still have free will and rationality. To deny either would be to deny their humanity. They are not angels or gods, they are human beings born in particular circumstances and educated in a particular place and time. They each have their own judgement, INFORMED but not replaced by the Holy Spirit. It is naive and damaging to assert that there is no human input in the election. Naive because there is a great deal of politics in the Church at every level and in every time. This is not incompatible with the movings of the Holy Spirit, since it is God who is the source of our being and He who guides us. And if it is not an election, then was the Holy Father lying when he used that word? Are all the Cardinals wrong when they call it an election? The fact is, it IS an election. " They are a spendid order, at least the one in D.C. are." I agree 100% that the DHS and CUA have some brilliant and holy Dominicans. In fact, I count many of them as my friends. I am moving to DC this fall and will take classes at DHS and at CUA. I have been a student with some of the friars there. Still, you must realize that you are making a generalization. You cannot judge an entire global order based on a few priests in one city. The vast majority of Dominicans are holy and orthodox, but there are many exceptions, especially among the active women and in other areas. BTW, I am finished with religious but still discerning my call to priesthood.
argent_paladin
It is a requirement that a Cardinal first be ordained a bishop. From the Code of Canon Law: "Can. 351 §1 Those to be promoted Cardinals are men freely selected by the Roman Pontiff, who are at least in the order of priesthood and are truly outstanding in doctrine, virtue, piety and prudence in practical matters; those who are not already Bishops must receive episcopal consecration." Note the final clause. That word is "must". But also note that the Holy See can dispense from ecclesial law. Avery Cardinal Dulles asked for and recieved dispensation from episcopal ordination, due to his advanced age. Cardinal Dulles still is treated as a bishop in terms of precedence. Thy Geekdom Come
...and for some reason, a German-speaker sounds more menacing as the Church's theological enforcer.
Ash Wednesday
JAWOHL.... a good "NIEN! DAS IST NICHT RICHTIG!!!!!!" does have a certain stamp to it. As far as the age thing, they could elect him at 60 (the pope was 58, after all), but I doubt it is likely after a long pontificate. But certainly he could be someone to watch. Argent: Matthew Fox has a book called "Magical Mystery Bear"? It sounds like he wrote lyrics for the Beatles, too.
argent_paladin
Sorry, it's "On Becoming a Musical Mystical Bear". Also, see ""Whee! We, Wee All the Way Home". You have to admit, he has a flair for eye-catching titles. Still, he epitomizes all that I despise about a certain type of Christian heresy. At least he had the integrity to leave the Catholic Church officially.
Guest Scottgun
I'm not going to debate the merits of the Dominican order, but doesn't the mere fact that he is in a religious order work against him? That is, candidates from religious orders rarely get elected Pope? Scott
Theologian in Training
Matthew Fox, author of Magical Mystical Bear and founder of the Creation Spirituality Center was also a Dominican. The sisters who threw their own blood on some missles in Colorado are Dominicans. There are many Dominicans who are not orthodox. I would say Opus Dei or Legionaires would be a better guarantee of orthodoxy nowadays. BTW, before you attack, know that I was a Dominican seminarian for four years, met Schonborn as a fellow Dominican and love the Order dearly. But to be a Dominican is to love Truth above all.
Matthew Fox is no longer a Dominican though, actually, he is no longer a member of the Catholic Church. I think he was getting tired of being silenced by the Vatican so much, so, last I heard, he is an Episopal Minister Matthew Fox Check out his New Mass Techno Cosmic Mass Really strange guy.
