Krush2k2
Imagine if the next pope elected was the chinese cardinal. What a huge way to shake the east and branch out Catholicism. But I doubt the thought will even be suggested in the conclave. Thoughts?
Thy Geekdom Come
There is a chance, but let's not discuss it all too much...I'm sure the Chinese are being ridiculously careful to make sure they don't let any cardinals out to the conclave.
Aloysius
I wouldn't doubt the thought would be suggested in the conclave actually. Everyone has on mind that the last pope toppled communist Russia, I mean it's all over the news! lol what I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall in this conclave. seriously, there's gonna be a big discussion over whether it should be a European to fight the declining faith in Europe, or a Latin American or an African and maybe someone will suggest the Chinese (we'd have to be pretty arrogant to think we'd think of that but the Cardinals wouldn't! )... I think this conclave is going to be long... probably some time between a few months and a year. I mean come on, they just built them a luxury Hotel! lol
argent_paladin
I predict that the conclave will end within 7 days. In modern times it usually ends pretty quickly. They have two votes a day and after a certain number of votes they no longer need a 2/3rds majority. I doubt it will be a Chinese Cardinal. It might be the last hurrah for an Italian or possibly a Latin American. And then there is Arinze.
Krush2k2
Why not a Chinese though, why not take advantage of his influence over the east?
DemonSlayer
It'd be great, but now that I think about, it's pretty unlikely, seeing the state of the true Church in China.
crusader1234
I think that the next Pope will be a visible minority. If the next Pope is white, I'll be disappointed a bit.

Krush2k2
It'd be great, but now that I think about, it's pretty unlikely, seeing the state of the true Church in China.
the reason it is weak is the exact reason it would be a good idea to elect a chinese man for pope, to strenghten it where it needs it the most. Prayers for that! Ash Wednesday
Apparently there was an unnamed, "secret" cardinal that was to be participating in the conclave. It was some curious thing I heard on the news. There have been "secret" cardinals before where the name is witheld (I'm presuming from communist Russia or places like that), and there was speculation that it was so the representative who would be from a place like China would be protected. I don't think that means a Chinese Pope, however. I don't think the cardinals would be ready for that. I think they would be ready for a pope from the 3rd world, though. I don't care -- except God's will be done regarding the matter.

argent_paladin
There is no Chinese cardinal, to our knowledge. There is one from Taiwan but he is over eighty. The most likely in Asia is Ivan Cardinal Dias of India. There are two Cardinals in Japan, two in Vietnam and one in Korea, but any Asian is highly unlikely as is any North American. This is because the cardinals will only elect someone who is known to them (you only vote for someone as pope if you know him). If you are a bishop in Asia, you only come to Rome once every five years for a bit. Basically, there is a bias for those who live in or close to Rome. The best candidate, in my opinon, is someone who has had ten plus years of pastoral experience as a bishop and is now working in the Vatican. Cardinal Arinze is one of these people. You need to be known and liked by eighty Cardinals to be elected. It is doubtful that any Asian cardinal has even met that many Cardinals.
Aloysius
we are thinking about the 118th secret cardinal who was recently named by JPII that we do not know the name of. There is speculation that he's in the underground Church in China. So, there is a possibility that he'd come to the conclave or something, or the cardinals might find out about who he is when they're in there. now that I think about it though, if it is an underground Cardinal in China, he probably wouldn't risk coming to Rome. I mean, if he could get there in secret and sneak into the conclave before any pesky reporter exposes him then maybe... I donno
cmotherofpirl
Usually a long papacy is followed by the election of an older man, sort of a caretaker pope. Thats what they had in mind when they elected John the XXIII. Boy were they surprised. THe Holy Spirit has a definite sense of humor.
