Copying music

Is it wrong to copy a CD, as long as you dont sell it? Obviously, if you sell a copied CD, it would be wrong. But what about copying it to give to a family member, or copying it to have the CD in your car, and the same CD in your house (so that way you dont have to move them between places)? Thanks for your advice!

Yeah it's fine. As long as it's just like a backup of a cd you have. I have coppies of all my faves in my car.

I don't see anything wrong with it either. But maybe thats just because I do it often and am biased. ^_^ I say go for it...you seem to know whats right and wrong in the situation. God bless.

Is it wrong to copy to give to family members? I get the feeling it is, but what do you think? Is there any teaching in the Catechism?

I don't think there's a Catechism verse on it, but based on my own conscience, I should buy the CD for someone, not burn it.

yes, the artist and record company deserve to get paid for their work. remember that they are often trying to live off this work and support their families. it is good to pay them. but yes, you can make copies of cd's that you have paid for, for your own personal use. i make copies and mix cd's of cd's i have all the time for in my car. but these are cd's that i have bought.

I back up all of my CD's on my computer...then I can put them on my mp3 player or burn mix cd's...I also like to have car copies of my cd's not b/c i dont want to move them around but because Cd's in the car usually get all scratched up

Making a copy for someone else is stealing, for you would normally pay for a copy for someone else. Whether or not that type of stealing is grave matter is another question: according to an old Redemptorist (I think) examination of conscience, stealing an amount equivalent to a day's wages is grave matter.

I copy my family's cds a lot, we do it all the time. It makes no sesne to buy two copies, and I find I like some of their cds. I also like to have backups on hard-to-find cds.

The problem is when purchasing items for your use (anything really goes here, even houses) they can be shared witha nyone you want to. However, it is wrong (even if it is your family since a consumer is seen as a singular person as opposed to a family buying something like a CD) to make copies of anyone elses CDs and use them. That is, unless they don't listen to the CD the same time you do, which would then make you held responsible for stealing since the CD in itself is only sold to one person and two instances of it's use would make the same CD become two CDS and have two owners. Thus, it's fine to do it (listen to copies of your famalies stuff) as long as no one else is listening to a copy (or the original) at the time you do.

God bless,
Mikey
