musturde
Tobacco and other smokeable objects that are pleasing were on this earth of a reason. Addicition is evil, but otherwise a good smoke once in a while is a nice break, like a cup of wine. While not as healthy, for sure, it isn't totally awful either. Cigarrets don't have my approval (they don't need it) but a pipe or cigar once in a while is a good thing. It should be noted however that not very many saints (if any at all) smoked regularly. God bless, Mikey
Man I love hubbly bubbley(My family let me taste it once), sometimes people smoke it too much and it's really bad for u. I think it's alright once in a while though. IXpenguin21
the biggest reason i can find not to smoke is because it can be spending money on self indulgence in some cases. smoking is not intrinsically evil. it does not relate to the essential nature of evil things. addictions do
Pio Nono
JMJ 3/29 - Easter Tuesday Nicotene has been shown to thin out the blood (which can be good for people with cholesterol problems) as well as aid in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease. Don't say that it's no good.
2. Did this blessed know of the dangers of smoking?
This is modernistic thinking - that people before the "scientific era" didn't have access to a basic understanding that somehow, smoking adversely affected health. That's why the studies in the 1940s were so revolutionary that said smoking was good for you - turns out the old wisdom saw right through that. Also, if you are going to assert that something is sinful, the burden of proof lies with you - we must always assume the innocence of an act, according to a basic moral principle. So far, I have yet to see how smoking is sinful. It's unhealthy? So is a lot of stuff that I eat and drink - they do good things for me (McDonald's french fries give me nourishment, right?), but they also do bad things (they clog up my arteries faster than you can blink). Because it's addictive? So is alcohol - anything that results in addiction is sinful. If "addictiveness" is a factor that makes it sinful, then sexual behavior is sinful as well (I'm assuming that sexual intercourse is more interesting than cigarette smoking, but I'll leave that to the married couples). What's your operating principle? What makes it sinful?
JuCa
pipes smell awesome...i would totally not mind a pipe smoking guy around here. not really a girly thing to me...
I'm a girl... and smoke a pipe on occassion! Who cares if it's not girly.. it's fun. I finally have one of my own.. cool little cow tin to keep my tobacco in. Briar and Bean is the best store ever.. I love going in there smelling all the goods.. My dream is to live out in WV and have a front porch I can sit on while smoking a pipe with some fiddle playing friends. I doubt that ever happens.. but it'd be cool!!! One of my greatest moments in life was smoking a pipe with my grandpa who is 92 and still kicking it.. smoked a pipe up until this past year! He said smoking his pipe prolonged his life.. haha He is way cool.. :thumb:

toledo_jesus
If you go through life realizing that at some point everything can be sinful (even excessive prayer) then you are going to be one unhappy individual. If you start to equate pleasure with sin then you'll end up like the bloody puritans. :freak:
IXpenguin21
when i walk around campus smoking a pipe, people who i would think would be appalled at the smell of smoke are like, oh my gosh that smells great!! thats doesn't seem to be the same for cigars and cigarettes. theculturewarrior
I think it depends. I smoked from the age of twelve to about the age of 24, and all the while I had severe asthma. If I had stuck with, I could really have had a lung removed even at my young age. Also, melanoma runs in my family. For me I think it was a direct violation of "thou shalt not kill." Imsogoodlooking
JMJ 3/29 - Easter Tuesday I smoke a pipe when I want to get thinking, a cigar with a glass of scotch (or at the horse track), and a cigarette when I need a break from intensive studying. A pack of cigarettes usually goes stale for me before I can smoke them all, though.
I love Scotch. So what's your poison? Glenfidditch 18 year for me. (Although I do on occasion meet up with my good pal Johnny Walker...) BTW: Nothing's better than a fine cigar and a game of golf on a breezy day!
