I enjoy a cigerette everyonce in a while. It allows me to relax. I dont think it is sinful as long as you dont do it so you get addicted or you break the law (under 18 smoking). I asked a moral theologian (a jesuit) and thats what he told me
I've smoked a few cigarettes.

Which circle of Hell does that put me in?
My purpose isn't to judge...that's why I made sure I specified the context of fully knowledge and consent. One under an addiction does not give full consent.

Please don't imply that I'm trying to judge. I'm trying to put in the voice of reason against smoking. Every evil brings some temporal joy, the fact is that no evil brings lasting joy. This doesn't mean that every good brings lasting joy, but no good brings lasting evil. Smoking brings lasting evil and temporary joy. Sounds like an objective evil to me.

As for addiction, we are to give ourselves to others in love and service. This is the universal calling. We cannot give what we don't have, and if we are addicted to anything, we are slaves to it, and cannot give ourselves. Addictions inhibit our ability to love and serve.

I'll smoke a cigar on occasion...like, maybe two a year. On special occasions, such as birthday and July 4th, and outside (my mom would have a fit!)

I own a pipe, and though the most cost effective of the three choices given, i do enjoy the fellowship of my friends when we have a cigar night at school. to me, cigars are more powerful than a pipe.

I used to be a cigarette smoker. I started when i was 18 and i would smoke anywhere from a pack a month to a pack a week. When i went to school, i lived with men who didn't particularly like the cigarette aroma that would linger inside with me after i was done with a smoke. i figured i might as well take a break from it.

you'd think that a pack a week ment i was addicted, well i stopped cold turkey and never had a craving so bad that i had to have a cigarette. This is why i don't support the addiction argument whole heartedly. addiction is different in everybody and the CCC is slow to generalize things in this regard (just like how it's wrong to get drunk, but wine is good. they'll never forbid alcohol)

as far as the everything in moderation issue, i think it's more apropreate to say, 'every good in moderation' not every-thing. every thing in moderation does open the window to drug use and permescuity, but everything that was created for man to partake of freely is good, but isn't the ultimate good, thus moderation is key in being able to partake in these.

Alcohol isn't intrinsically evil...alcohol in small amounts can be beneficial to health...just like sweets. ;)

Tobacco and other smokeable objects that are pleasing were on this earth of a reason. Addicition is evil, but otherwise a good smoke once in a while is a nice break, like a cup of wine. While not as healthy, for sure, it isn't totally awful either. Cigarrets don't have my approval (they don't need it) but a pipe or cigar once in a while is a good thing. It should be noted however that not very many saints (if any at all) smoked regularly.

God bless,
Mikey

3/29 - Easter Tuesday

I smoke a pipe when I want to get thinking, a cigar with a glass of scotch (or at the horse track), and a cigarette when I need a break from intensive studying. A pack of cigarettes usually goes stale for me before I can smoke them all, though.

Only the occasional cigar.
I used to smoke Backwoods to look like Clint Eastwood - LOL - but haven't touched them in years. For me cigars are totally non-addictive.

Never touch cigarettes - nasty habit!

Full knowledge and consent are meaningless if they are not attached to sin.

Smoking isn't a sin.

So the argument is moot anyways.

1. Smoking is objectively sinful. It is damaging to the body as well as to the bodies of others. Even if there is a "good" to them, there is not "good" to the others, and therefore, there is most definitely sin.

2. Did this blessed know of the dangers of smoking?

I think it is silly to talk about, is this is a sin or not. I think we all agree if you are a habitual smoker, than it is no good. If you smoke once in a while, and have no addiction, and don't go overbored, than enjoy yourself. Drinking can be harmful, too, but having a drink is not sinful.

If it affects YOU spiritually, then don't do it, but you can't tell someone what is a sin to them...just my opinoin...

now, anyone have any cherry cigars????? :rolling: :cowboy:
