Thy Geekdom Come
"Smoking is a mortal sin. Sorry, but that's the truth." -Fr. Corapi Granted, he was speaking in the context of full knowledge and consent of will...but I'm not going to stay out of a thread just because I'm told to when major danger could be at hand. Smoking damages your body and robs you of life. It is an evil, grave or not. Arguably, your old pastor is not as educated as Fr. Corapi.
drewmeister2
Yes, you're right about that, priests can be wrong, but we are specifically told by the church not to destroy our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit, and with all the new science out about smoking, it can't possibly be beneficial. Just my thoughts.

[/quote] Sweets do not always do damage, smoking does. The body needs sugars and other such substances. Additionally, so long as there is no excess, sweets can sweeten one's own life. Smoking, on the other hand, leads to hacking, coughing, weezing, and the only pleasure is that of getting a fix for an addiction. It would be much more pleasurable to be free of an addiction, wouldn't it?
drewmeister2
Sweets arent bad, in moderation. Smoking is bad, regardless if you do it in moderation or not. Let me give you another example: you can't say everything in moderation. Why? Because then you could say, smoke weed in moderation, have sex outside of marriage in moderation, etc. So that phrase doesn't apply to everything. God Conquers
Pipes rule. I have a Medico... It's very relaxing. And it depends how you define smoking... I'm quite sure smoking doesn't always damage your body. Sitting in front of campfires every night in the summer is probably just as bad. Regardless, Fr. Corapi is hardly an authority on the subject. I'd check the catechism... aaaand, nope, smoking is not a mortal sin. Being addicted to things is sinful, but not everyone who smokes is addicted. I'm a fan of Canadian grown tobacco, it's a little milder than the British stuff, but still in the same tradition. Brigham's is good.

Smoking can indeed sweeten your life, if you're inclined to smoke. If you don't want to, you don't have to. Cigarettes are awful and I would never inhale one. A cigar or a pipe is much better, and much less addictive. Cigarettes are just nicotine delivery systems. I have a cheap ol' Dr. Grabow pipe from Wal-Mart. I need to find another blend soon, they changed the one I was smoking.
