Seatbelt Blue
Oooh. Short, powerful, insightful. I like. Mind if I use?? Not at all. A little elaboration, though. An infallible book, no matter how perfect, has it's infallibility negated if it cannot be taught perfectly and infallibly, by the simple fact that we fallible people are pretty much guaranteed to screw something up. After all, the Bible can't scream "you're misinterpreting me!" Rather, a fallible teacher will continue proclaiming his sensible error, and lead many astray. But if the teacher is infallible, the book's infalliblity is given wing, and is able to be an accurate source of doctrine.
Donna
Hello, Monica, how's life? Just want to add that: Doctrine = teaching (as in a teaching or tenet to be believed of the faith). Dogma = defined doctrine (or defined teaching). When it comes down to "what must we believe in order to be Catholic?" the short answer is dogma's of the faith. The infallibility of the Pope comes in him being the vessel, so to speak, in the definition of a doctrine (which is dogma). Infallible = it cannot fail. So it is the definition (of a doctrine) which cannot fail. Edited November 3, 2003 by Donna

littleflower+JMJ
and that kind of thinking comes from biased, anti-catholic sources, and is lacking truth.

Katholikos
Monica...I like your way of thinking... Monica, Robyn, your way of thinking, unfortunately, if followed to its logical conclusion, is the path to atheism. The basic premise of Protestantism (Sola Scriptura) is that the Holy Spirit guides each individual with a sincere heart to "all truth" in interpreting the Bible. You believe, then, that 33,820 interpretations of the same book are true, the work of the Holy Spirit. But you don't believe that 2 + 2 has more than one correct answer, do you? No, of course not. Yet you believe there is no singular Truth to the questions concerning mankind's salvation. Or, if you believe there is, you also believe that you have it and Catholics do not. Even though what you have is just another interpretation of the Bible. Logically, if everything or anything can be true, then nothing is T-R-U-E. Hmmmmm. That's very odd thinking inDouche.
