Paphnutius
From what little I have had to read from him in class, I do not like his theories. They take a little too much liberty and do not seem to respect the sacredness of Scripture. Just my humble opinion though...

cmotherofpirl
Father Brown started out well, but foundered on the reliablilty and authorship of Scripture. He would fit in well with the Jesus seminar people. He wrote many popular books that ultimately led people out of the Church. He even gave himself his own imprintaturs on his books. Run.
We are reading about a protestant author in my NT class that quotes himself all over the place! I mean really. Every other page there is a note that says 'For more on this material see my book X" "Material taken from my study X"
thessalonian
WOW! Our Bishop sent me a reply when I complained that a local Catholic Paper printed and article that said that the story of the woman at the well didn't really happen and it was a later insert by johannian authors. The Bishop supported the author and used Fr. Brown and the fact that one of his books that said the very same thing had an impramature. I wish I had that article before I replied to him. I pointed out that I had heard of his liberal tendencies but it would have been nice to have such canon fodder to back it up. I think I will send him a copy. Very sad. Luthien
It doesn't surprise me that the priest at the church I went to last night would quote this man. Its in the most liberal part of my state.
ThyWillBeDone
Fr. Brown is a pretty big name in scripture scholarship these days, some would agrue that a sign that the historical critical method, and other "high critical methods" are being over used and abused. We use one of this books, and introduction to New Testament for the Intro to Scripture class at the Seminary I attend. He makes some "phisy" statements sometimes, but he is not all bad, as long people keep in mind that the historical critical method is not all bad, it has limited instance when it can be used correctly, but it seems scripture scholars today seem to be abusing it. We should always start from the position that Scripture is divinely inspired and inerrant, some scholars come at the scripture to critically, they say the are being "unbiased" or "scientific" when they approach the bible as nothing more then an acient text, Father Brown seems to do this on not all but on a good number of occasion. So from what I have heard about him and read by him, I can say he is not all bad, but he does seem to take the historical critical method and other high literary critical methods too far on many occasion. I really suggest everyone read some of Dei Verbum Sancta Mater Ecclesiam , Provistentissmus Deus and Divine Afflante Spiritu these documents give the church teachings on scripture and how it should be read and studied. Or if you looking for an easier read read Scott Hahn's Scripture Matters God Bless
