Catholic Shrines....

Post them!! Just like the Cathedrals, but Shrines! Or any of the ones you've been to! Anywhere in the world!! Or your favorites!b Or....whatever, just post!! :P

I live close to a very popular one, although I've never been there....it's dedicated to Our Lady of Charity (Nuestra Senora de la Caridad), and she is especially honored by all the Haitian and Cuban refugees here in Miami. Walk into any church in Miami and SOMEWHERE you'll see a statue or an icon of Nuestra Senora de la Caridad.

Here ya go....

Good question...

I think they are specially dedicated churches, which don't have a diocese? Something to that effect. Hope someone else answer's.

I just think they're cool Churches (a bit more than regular churches, but a bit less than Cathedrals).

And a note: when I say churches in this context I mean the buildings. Although they are all a part of the Catholic Church, which teaches ONE set of beliefs. ;)

Shrine of Bl. Francis Seelos - his giant reliquary is here too, St. Mary's Assumption Church in New Orleans (this is the most breathtaking church/shrine I have ever seen in the USA!!) Please Check out the Slideshow link and see both the Shrine and the CHurch - they will knock your socks off!!!

I thought they were places that had particualr significance, for example where someone had received a vision from God and miraculous things happened as a result, rather than starting life as a church. Some of them are really beautiful and have an amazing sense of peace. I'm not too keen on all the material trappings which you can sometimes find outside the shrines though.

A number of the very ancient ones here in the UK eventually became places where religious orders were set up (I don't know if that was common everywhere), and convents or monasteries were established there.

Thomas Michael

It would take me hours to find all the cool churches I've been to, so I'll just post diocese websites and let you hunt down the links. :P

I like some modern-looking churches as much as I like the old-style churches. Among my favorites:

St. Cecilia, Dallas

Christ The King, Dallas

St. Albert, Austin

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Keller (Fort Worth)

Sacred Heart, Galveston

St. Monica, Dallas

St. Philip, Lewisville (Fort Worth)

St. Ann, Coppell (Dallas)

Santa Clara, Dallas

St. Anthony of Padua, The Woodlands (Houston)

St. Anne, Houston

Annunciation, Houston

St. Thomas Aquinas, Dallas
