gonzaga
Yeah, havin a crucifix on makes you 'papish' of a 'fenian' here. weird to think scotland used to be a Catholic country, then came the reformation, which burned down all but one church in scotland. about 1800 odd glasgow only had 28 Catholics, it was only when the potato famine in ireland happened more Catholics came over. Deeds
Hello. I don't visit this site very much but don't you remember our wee discussion on Celtic and Rangers? I think you're maybe exaggerating just a teeny-weeny little bit. Maybe I walk about with my head in the clouds, but I've never had any negativity whatsoever directed at me for being Catholic. gonzaga
Nope, no exageration at all. People were almost angry that I dare walk the streets with my ashes on my head. anyway, wherebouts outside glasgow u from?
Deeds
Renfrewshire. Where was this, that people were so angry? I mean, I can see that maybe in Livingston or certain parts of Glasgow like Denniston perhaps, but generally I've not noticed any anti-Catholicism, ever. gonzaga
are you a girl/boy? what age? Im sure you have noticed the campaigning by public and government to have Catholic schools shut down. As they 'breed bigotry', total nonsense. Well on that theory, is it only Catholics that are bigots? I will fight to stop the closure of any Catholic school in Scotland. England, Wales, Ireland, Spain, coming to think of it, most countries have Catholic schools and there is no problem.
iggy
Ash Wednesday after mass, myself and 3 female friends were walking to the dorms, and a woman asked us if we were doing something for a sorority (sp?) Then before my Mechanics of Elastic Bodies class, people wanted to know what the blob on my forhead was.
gonzaga
Yeah, most people in my work were like, 'you have something on your head'. to be fair, one of them apologised because he didnt realise at first what it was, but I told him not to worry about it, there is no badness in him at all( for a protestant)

Yes, I know there are those who don't like the existence of state-funded Catholic school, but generally it's not a case of "Those damned Catholics, filling the heads of weans with their Papist nonsense!" It's more along the lines of not agreeing with what some see as effectively state sponsorship of religion and segregation of children. I don't want Catholic schools to be abolished, but I understand the reasoning behind the opposite view, and I don't feel like a poor persecuted wee Catholic because of it. And actually, most countries keep religion out of their state schools system. Australia, France, Germany, USA...
