gonzaga
which was great. but walking back to my work I got quite a few looks, probably some of ignorance(he's got somehtin on his head) but the angry looks I got was quite frightening, I could feel the hatred coming from A LOT of people. I mean, people really were growling at me, because that sign on my head, was a sign I was Catholic, and a lot of people don't like anything Catholic. Scotland really does have a problem with Catholics and Catholicism, with a lot of talk in government to get Catholic schools shut down, it is institutionalized. But, I for one am glad, and proud to be a Roman Catholic.

Deeds
No-one has ever growled at me when I've walked around with ashes on my forehead. You do get a few puzzled looks though.
not in my part of the states anyway, (Ohio). You might get people tell you you have dirt on your head and stuff like that though
Mr. Cube
Yeah, that'sthe way it is in Illinois too; no one mentions the ashes, but if you wear a scapular over your shirt people ask, "Do you work here?"

Sanvean
Thanks. Is it the same where you are?
Definitely... it was a little disturbing going to class yesterday. I got some intense glares and muttered comments beyond the standard "There's something on your forehead". I suppose a lot of the animosity has to do with the gay marriage issue in Canada right now... tensions are rather high.
Catholictothecore
I remember a few years ago, right after I'd had my big "conversion", aka, realizing that religion and God were really what I wanted and that it was going to be AWESOME, I was walking in the downtown area of the city. I was wearing my new crucifix I'd gotten on the retreat, and, man, I was on such a high! I remember getting a lot dirty looks, but most just ignored me. We need to pray for those people, especially those in countires like Scotland, I guess.

desertwoman
I always wondered what that was. So now I know, and knowing is half the battle.
Karinsbestfriend
A lady that worked in a store I went to said she saw a lot of people with ashes on their foreheads, and was wondering what it was for.
Daniel9
Hello! I live in California, so people don't blink twice seeing something on your forehead. Actually, I've never received a negative reaction to the ashes. The funny part is I work for the United Methodist Church and my co-workers actually act a bit jealous that their church doesn't place such importance on Ash Wednesday. When I arrived home last night my 5-year-old son, Sean, said, "cool tattoo, Dad!" - Daniel
