1337 k4th0l1x0r
Okay, my fiancee and I went to the Ash Wednesday mass at 7:00 at our parish and were both shocked by the music tonight. It wasn't horribly performed, it's just that the selection was downright awful. The intro hymn was pretty good and was out of the Lent section of the missalette, but the other music was downright horrible for Ash Wednesday. During the Offertory, they played (but didn't sing) 'On Eagle's Wings,' which is about as sappy and 'feel good' of a song as you can get. The communion hymn I can't honestly remember, but it was more about following Christ rather than a reflection on penitence. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, the choir sang a song where just about to break out into clapping and it was way too cheery for Ash Wednesday. We've just about had enough of how bad the music has become here. Between this and them changing the response to the psalm to something totally not in the book and 30 words long, we've about had enough. And why can't they just use 'Lamb of God, ..., Lamb of God, ..., Lamb of God, grant us peace?' Instead, it's 'Jesus, Lamb of God, ..., Jesus, Bread of Life, ..., Jesus, king of hip-hop, ...' (okay, i was kidding about the hip-hop part). We're going to go the next pastoral council meeting and let our concerns be noted. We talked to the priest (associate pastor) who said the mass tonight and he only said to talk with the pastor. So did anyone else have poor music selection tonight? Dave
Oh yeah, the music sucked at my parish too. The entrance song (I don't think this song can rightfully be called a hymn) was "Glory and Praise to Our God," one of those songs that one normally plays using the guitar rather than the organ. And yes, it was all guitar music. And at least some of the music for the parts such as the Memorial Acclamation and the Great Amen came from the Mass of Creation. We don't have guitar music often, but I'm sorely tempted to ask the guy who plays the guitar to please stop -- that it's highly inappropriate for any Mass, not just Ash Wednesday Mass. As you can tell, the only instrument I think is appropriate at Mass is the organ ... but of course I wouldn't mind a symphony-type orchestra either. Ash Wednesday
Ours was nice n' traditional and even at times gloomy. The way I like it. I tend to prefer the music during Lent. Maybe I'm actually a closeted goth.

[/quote] Yeah, they need to ditch the guitars and the drums. The guitar isn't necessarily bad in and of itself, but most people only know how to play the guitar as a rock instrument. Classical guitar is quite good, elegant, and would actually be nice in Mass. Too bad very few know how to do it.

immaculata
heh.. no offense, but our choir director at school is Jewish, so she really doesn't have any idea about what's going on in a Catholic liturgy. And students aren't allowed input, we're just assigned what to sing. Our closing hymn was "Blest are They" which A) is excessively too long for a closing hymn and B) is excessively too perky for a Lenten hymn. She *attempted* to have us sing "Refiners Fire" as the PSALM until I nixed that and demanded that she move it to the offertory and have the psalm read. I sang a communion meditation solo of "How Beautiful" which would have been, well, beautiful.. some other time in the liturgical year. -_-
the_rev
I hope myparishes didn't, I was in the choir Opening, Somebody's knockin' at your door Ashes being distributed: Ahses and Jesus Walked this Lonesom Valley Offeratory: Forty Days and Forty Nights, Throughout the forty.... Communion, we had three songs, but they were all short songs and during Lent our parish doesn't have a closing song, we leave in peace. and Immaculata, I thought you were the cantor at the Ash Wednesday Mass. cmotherofpirl
Can somebody post me the links of what is acceptable church music and what is not? Especially the part about still singing latin. I want to print them out for my choir director.
