yiannii
I am in the middle of a debate with some homosexual friends regarding gay marriage. I know that I have made my points clear, and seeing they are not practicing Catholics/Christians etc I have tried to keep the argument as far away from religion as possible. In the last reply to my post someone posted this link: http://www.theweekmagazine.com/briefing.asp?a_id=567 . I was wondering if any of you Catholic apologists out there could read the article and give me an honest opinion on it; your queries, any lies in the article etc. Thanks in advance for helping me defend the truth. phatcatholic
Yiannii~
in the New Advent article on the History of Marriage we find that the promiscuity proposed in your article as the norm among prehistoric peoples really only existed among a few small groups. also, religion shaped marriage long before the Catholic Church got involved. in the OT we find many Jewish laws that shape the state and nature of marriage. of course, Jesus effected marriage even further w/ his teaching on "two becoming one" and his prohibition of divorce. saying that love didn't enter the picture until the middle ages is ludicrous. Igantius of Antioch (110 AD) had this to say:
" Flee wicked arts; but all the more discourse regarding them. Speak to my sisters, that they love in our Lord, and that their husbands be sufficient for them in the flesh and spirit. Then, again, charge my brethren in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that they love their wives, as our Lord His Church. If any man is able in power to continue in purity, to the honour of the flesh of our Lord, let him continue so without boasting; if he boasts, he is undone; if he become known apart from the bishop, he has destroyed himself. It is becoming, therefore, to men and women who marry, that they marry with the counsel of the bishop, that the marriage may be in our Lord, and not in lust. Let everything, therefore, be [done] for the honour of God."
also, note that the laws of the american colonists that gave the man the dominance in marriage were a product of the state, not the Church. "marital rape" as a wrong is novel to the state, not the Church. homosexual unions have never been sactioned by the catholic church. this "Order for Solemnisation of Same Sex Union" by the Greek Orthodox is referred to often all over the internet.........but no one seems to have the original source for this that was just a quick rebuttal. read the following articles for more information: --Marriage Banns --Civil Marriage --History of Marriage --Mixed Marriage --Moral and Canonical Aspect of Marriage --Mystical Marriage --Putative Marriage --Ritual of Marriage --Sacrament of Marriage --Validation of Marriage --ECF's on Marriage the entry on Marriage in the reference section may be of help to you as well. pax christi, phatcatholic
