dUSt
It's been brought up that phatmass isn't the safest place for teens because of some of the topics that get discussed here. Question to teens: Has phatmass made you stronger in your faith? Has phatmass made you doubt your faith? Thoughts?
BeenaBobba
Hi dUSt, Could you elaborate on that? Which topics are said to be dangerous for teens? Everything here seems to be rated G, PG, or PG-13, and teens under the age of 13 aren't allowed to sign up without parental permission. But as for me, Phatmass has made me stronger in my faith. Granted, I'm not a teen, but still. God bless, Jennifer
dUSt
For example, when certain members post about their homosexual lifestyle, or when schismatics post about things harmful to the church, etc. My philosophy is to let these things get posted with the hope that the faithful Catholics on this board will sufficiently defend true church teaching. Another philosophy which has been suggested is to strictly monitor and eliminate these types of topics all together. My thought is that we shouldn't censor certain subjects because this world will not censor them when teens hit the real world. I allow most types of topics because I would prefer my teen (if I had a teen) be exposed to it here first, so that he/she will learn how to confront the issue later. But I could be totally wrong. I have no degrees with this type of stuff.
Thy Geekdom Come
I was a teen when I joined and Phatmass most certainly made me stronger in my faith.
This is my policy at Flyfree as well. So long as the discussion deals with the topics appropriately, this is how I've handled it. It's better to discuss taboo things with the Church's mind than to let kids only hear about those things with the secular mind.
Sammy Blaze
Phatmass showed me how to be Orthodox, and has opened my eyes to aspects of my faith I'd never delve into. I would not be the Catholic I am today if it wasn't for this site and ALL the people in it. ~S.

If they don't hear it here, it will be somewhere else. I would much rather know they heard it here. The only thing i would change, is add a post icon for a sensitive subject like this so people would know before opening what it is like. Just an idea. I think that you have to figure it out though and what you want it to be. There are benefits and disadvantages to each one. Phatmass has changed some things in my life. It has made my faith stronger. Now i don't post near as much, i just read them. I was to noisy for a while, but i still go look stuff up in the catechism because of it. That helps in a lot of things. sweetpea316
I think that phatmass is wonderful for both Catholic and non-Catholic teens. (ex:myself) I'll admit that before meeting a few certain people and before becoming addicted to this website, I has some serious misconceptions about the Catholic church. I was rather closed minded and sheltered from other religions and their beliefs and honestly, phatmass has helped change that in a huge way. It (along with some other things) has made me question things in the religion that I've been raised in, and has made me consider converting actually. So, if anything, I believe that phatmass is in no way detrimental to people, especially teenagers, but can be eye-opening and very beneficial. And that's coming first hand from a teenager that phatmass has influenced in a positive way.

rachael
What do us teens not already know about many of these issues? I don't think it should be consored whatsoever. It's hard enough to talk about many of these topics with parents, friends, etc. It's nice to know I can talk about them freely on here.
Brother Adam
yeah. I don't count as a teen anymore, but I came here as a Baptist and am now Catholic. questions?
Socrates
Phatmass has been linked to lung cancer and heart disease and should therefore be banned from teenagers. But seriously, though I'm far from teenaged in years, I don't think phatmass is hurting anyone's faith. Since I've joined, its helped me return to being more serious about the faith and religious things. Some of us who use phatmass are older, and I'd hate to see this become a "kiddy" site from which any controversy is banned. However, I think it might be wise to edit threads about sexually explicit topics, especially if they do not really relate to apologetic and faith issues. Unfortunately, I do agree that in today's society, teens will have already heard about most of the "bad" stuff discussed, and phatmass can be a way to let them know the truth on such matters, rather than the amoral misinformation coming at them from "the world." Seven77
im not a teenager but i think phatmass is a great place for fellowship where you can meet other faithful Catholics who love the Church and who are intent on sanctifying the popular culture. thats the part is where i think your philosophy comes in dUSt. i like it. i also like jezic idea to add an icon or some sort of heads up. i remember that there was a 'back alley' i never even went there cuz it sounded kind of shady..lol. glad its gone i learned alot from PM im trying to post more often
