My Grandmother

Good Friday

Recommended Posts

First of all, I wanted to update everyone on my grandmother. I have been posting about her on the prayer request board, but this is truly amazing and I wanted to share it with everyone. It seems that my grandmother -- diagnosed as terminal by five nurses (including the head nurse) and a lung specialist -- has once again defied her diagnosis, since her kidneys appear to have "restarted" even though it looked like they had failed. Her pneumonia, believe this or not, has begun to clear up. Of course this doesn't mean she won't still pass away soon. Her situation is always precarious, but at least now we know that she won't pass away with the suffering of pneumonia. It's truly amazing. Anyway, I ask for your continued prayers for her health and for her soul, and also for my family in coping with this situation.

The second amazing thing is that my family, which had not previously been getting along at all, is together now. Particularly my mother and her sister, who haven't spoken to each other in years. There are still tensions, though, so I ask for your prayers to help us keep family unity.

Finally, the third amazing thing is that my faith has been restored. It's been a gradual process, I suppose. I really believe it started with Terri Schindler and her suffering in Florida. I noticed that the Catholic Church is really the only group of people really watching out for her. After that, my grandmother's illness and impending death made me look at what I may be squandering away. I believe she's going to Heaven. Do I really want to waste my chance at getting to be with her for eternity? Having experienced this illness, this impending death, since Monday, everything else seems so silly. Female priests, SSAs, and double standards all pale in comparison to real, in-your-face dying. It basically comes down to this: Who will raise my grandmother from the dead? It won't be Sister Joan Chittister. It will be Jesus Christ, and if He died so that my grandmother could have life, the least I can do for Him is believe and obey.

I've been singing songs to my grandmother, because it helps her rest and takes her focus off of the pain. I've been singing her Amazing Grace, In the Garden, City of God, and some other ones. And I've been thinking to myself: I've been offered everything I've been singing about, and I said "no thanks." What's wrong with me? So I went into the chapel tonight at the hospital (it's a Catholic hospital), and I knelt before the Blessed Sacrament and reminded Jesus -- as if He didn't already know -- how really unworthy I am to kneel before Him. And I thanked Him for everything He's done for me lately, and I asked Him (again) to help me be a better person. As soon as possible, I'm going to go to Confession.

Anyway, I really believe that my grandmother's suffering has acted as a continual prayer for my conversion and for my family's unity. I would very much appreciate it if you would continue to pray for those things, as well as for an end to her suffering and for her soul. Thanks guys.

:) :):):):):):)

just goes to show no 1 knows who's sposed to die and when except God. if a doctor told me i had a week to live or something, i'd ask him if God told him that.

anyway, i'm so glad to hear about your faith, nathan! u really had me scared.. i mean i know i don't really know u that well, but i was really scared for u and u were definitely in my prayers, and im sure in the prayers of many PhatMassers.

praise God! prayers do get answerd if they be God's will.

if it weren't for the fact that i've been to confession today, THIS would've made my day. of course, being absolved of all my sins made by day, but this is # 2 on the list of things that made my day! this is definitely an amesome day! ^_^ :) :D

Nathan,

Great news about your Grandmother! Great news about you too!

Grace is continually offered, because we contuinually need it. Sometimes more than others. Even Peter didn't have perfect faith all the time. We are in a constant state of spiritual renewall. Don't ever give up because you aren't where you think you ought to be, spiritually. God is always there for us. Because we are human, we can't always remember to be faithful to His gifts. We cannot fail unless we refuse His help. You have been especially remembered in my prayers lately.

Greg
