cmotherofpirl
Minnesota Town Hits 54 Below Zero Jan 17, 4:31 PM (ET) By The Associated Pres Temperatures plummeted across the eastern half of the nation Monday, approaching an all-time record in northern Minnesota and freezing the Gulf Coast as a river of Arctic air pushed southward. Thermometers registered a low of 54 degrees below zero at Embarrass, Minn. "You keep living, but it gets old after a while," said Christine Mackai, the town clerk for the community of 691 people in northeast Minnesota. Minnesota's record is 60 below, set on Feb. 2, 1996, in Tower, about 10 miles north of Embarrass. The cold at Embarrass didn't stop the regular customers from getting their morning coffee at Four Corners, a cafe and gas station. "Everybody left their cars running," waitress Trish Roggenbuck said. "It was pretty much breathtaking when you walked outside." While below-zero readings stayed in the upper Midwest, thermometers dropped below the freezing mark all the way to the Gulf of Mexico coast. The morning low was 28, with wind chills in the upper teens, at Mobile, Ala., Gulfport-Biloxi, Miss., and Pensacola, Fla. A hard freeze warning was in effect overnight into Tuesday morning for parts of Mississippi, the weather service said. Mackai said Embarrass had been prepared for bitter cold as early as last Thursday. "It only got down to 28 below, and that's nothing. That's no big deal," she said. Elsewhere in northern Minnesota on Monday, Babbitt chilled to 51 below, and International Falls - which calls itself the Nation's Icebox - dropped to 44 below, the national Weather Service said. Farther south, Minneapolis-St. Paul bottomed out at a mere 11 below. The arctic blast followed several days of subzero temperatures. Weather service meteorologist Greg Frosig in Duluth said Monday's high would still be below zero in northern Minnesota. --- Edited January 18, 2005 by cmotherofpirl
zwergel88
yeah, Minnesota is real cold. I went there in the summer and it was like 50 degrees. here's an interesting fact though: global warming will actually make America get colder because the melting ice in the northern part of the world will cool and stop the gulf stream which helps to heat America. Iacobus
I love GW, it has a Catch-22 nature to it. Being one of those that knows his science, I fully relize that GW is occuring and the dangers thereof. But the C-22 makes it easy to "prove" no matter the facts. And zwergel88 is right. If the Gulf Stream cools, which it would (can you say Ice bergs off Flordia?) it would really effect the rest of the weather systems in the Northern Hemisphere. XIX
It seems to me that the environment is constantly changing. And pollution isn't good for the environment... That said, it's way too cold out there!! Bring on the spring, baby.

crusader1234
1) Global Warming is a misleading and unfortunate label for the underlying ecological problems 2) I live in Winnipeg, which is way north of there, and its currently bout the same. I walked home and my face felt like I was being slapped the whole way.

weunice
It isn't that global warming isn't true. I think a good case can be made for that. However, the part that is not certain is that man or industry has anything to do with it. A single large volcanic eruption can pour more into the atmosphere than what mankind can do in 50 years. Ask those who suffered through the summer of 1816 what that was like. Anyway, if someone asks you about global warming simply say, "yeah, it seems to coincide with the ready availibility of contraception". There is your link and the evidence for that claim is about as strong as the one claiming industry is causing this recent warmup. I doubt your opponent will see the humor in the statement but the fact remains that due to the complexity of our climate, tying global warming to a cause by man is a monumental task and, I say, near impossible. Finally, that doesn't mean we have to skirt our responsiblity as good stewards of Gods creation. We have a responsiblity as Catholics to treat all His creation as the good that it is. No snow in south Louisiana. We have had a couple of freezes in the past few days but soon enough it will be summer-lite again. Ship some of that winter down here. We can stock it up for use in the summertime.

Oik
Global warming and cooling is a natural occurance. The weather is sporadic and we still don't understand it's patterns (assuming there is one). Our pollution doesn't help and it is sickening to see it. However, the greenies attribute more concern to these topics than the real issue at hand; sin. Man's sinfulness has a more devestating(sp?) effect on nature than all other "green" issues combined.
